6 Details of Arlington’s First ‘Paint Bar’

The new business received an operating license Monday from the Arlington Board of Selectmen.

1.) THE BASICS: Three Lexington women, Helen Galanopoulous and Sheila Carme, both of Simonds Road, and Kim Bradshaw, of Hancock Street, are planning to open Arlington Art Lounge, a space offering two- to three-hour, step-by-step painting classes with light fare, at 1346 in Arlington Heights, the former home of the Savory Plate.

The women received an operating license Monday from the Arlington Board of Selectmen. They said they’re in the process of pursuing a beer and wine license as well.

2.) OPENING DATE: Arlington Art Lounge should have a soft opening, for friends and family, in August and be fully open in September, according to its owners.

3.) CONCEPT: The concept is the same as the traveling “paint nights” at various restaurants/bars, including Not Your Average Joe’s in Arlington Center. The classes will be $35 (not including food and beverages), and, during the classes, an instructor will walk participants through a particular painting.

In addition to the traveling “paint nights,” a number of similar establishments have opened nearby, including Pinot’s Palette in Lexington and Paint Corner Art Bar in Cambridge.

4.) THE OWNERS: Galanopoulos is an attorney for Au Bon Pain in Boston. Carne is a recruiter for Turbine Inc., a video game software company in Needham. Bradshaw is a partner at Logix Inc., an executive search firm in Waltham.

5.) MENU: In addition to beer, wine, coffee, tea and soda, Arlington Art Lounge’s preliminary or sample menu includes small plates, such as cheeses with a crostini, hummus with olives and pita bread, fruits and vegetables with dip, an antipasto plate and stuffed grape leaves, as well as bites, such as potato chips and nuts, and a few desserts, including baklava, chocolates, cookies and cupcakes.

6.) MORE: Once the business is established, the women talked about certain nights for senior citizens, kids or parent/kid classes, as well as expanding their offerings to poetry and cake decorating. They also have plans for fundraisers and partnering with local restaurants for tasting nights.

Arlington Art Lounge has a Twitter account set up, @ArlArtLounge.
