ReplyIt's never funny when someone gets assaulted...BUT..."A girl walked into the Arlington Center Starbucks Monday evening with a man in a black ski mask holding a large piece of wood,” does sound like the set-up for a bad joke.
Just glad that Patch didn't send this one out as "Breaking News" since Patch's standard for what is breaking news is a little low. -
On the article Town Holds Off on New Tobacco Regulations Vote

ReplyI hope this is a delay only and not a retreat from a commitment towards helping keep tobacco out of the hands of teenagers. And are most Boards of Health in neighboring towns just three people? That seems small in comparison with our other voluntary boards and commissions, but perhaps there is relevant state law dictating the composition of this important body that I am not aware of.

ReplyPeople can be against corner marijuana stores *without* being against doctors providing it to patients for whom it is the only effective treatment. Mass. General--along with every other hospital I have ever seen--has a pharmacy. Why couldn't marijuana "prescriptions" be filled there? I can answer my own question: Because this is more of an economic issue than a medical one. Lots of profit to be made by becoming a legal dealer.

ReplyGreetings from "east to roughly Alton Street!" When we moved here 22 years ago, we lived next to an esteemed structural engineering firm that kept banker's hours, and across from an alley that serviced only a neighborhood sub shop (Luigi's) and a charming pastry store (Helen's). Now my front door functions as a loading zone for trucks that are too long (or think they are too long) to turn into the alley for proper delivery of their alcohol, produce, meat and other supplies. Now the town changed the zoning of my house from R-2 to B-5 (still not sure how that could be done without any notification to us at all but that is what the assessor's database record now says) and allowed a drug treatment facility and music performance space to open up literally in my backyard (a change of use that should have required reopening the special permit held by SG&H since there is literally zero buffer space), but instead American Alarm was allowed to install diesel generators and giant a/c compressors outside my bedroom windows. I get it--things change. And if I don't like it, I should move to Vermont. But the lack of consideration for those of us who have the misfortune of being involuntarily rezoned and subjected to noxious uses of an abutting property should not go even further and allow yet more property value loss by adding a "medical marijuana dispensary" in an area where there is no buffer between residences and businesses of all kinds.

ReplyRight--we can commend the process (young people working to change their community) without agreeing with the likely outcome. I think most people respond better to incentives (e.g., "Bring in your own refillable coffee cup and get your coffee for $0.50 off.") rather than bans ("No, you can't have your coffee to go unless you bring in your own cup!") I hope the STM disposes of this article in a respectful (but quick) way and that these students go on to retain their concern for their community, but perhaps directed in a more practical way (e.g., organizing crews to pick up all the litter in the Center...)

Reply"Yummy's" is owned by the same guy who used to own Zoom Wireless (then Verizon and now Sprint) across the street next to Papa Gino's. I hope it doesn't end up being another "convenience" store.

I agree with what Nana23 said, The alleged crimes themselves are horrific and I hope the victims are getting all the help they need to address the effects of the alleged crimes. But what should also be of concern was how the allegations were addressed by the *current* management of the club. You would think, after all of the media attention addressing the acts of the Catholic Church, certain private schools, and others, that at the first mention of a possible crime (even decades ago), leadership would call (781) 643-1212 (the Arlington Police.) I can imagine a nonprofit conducting a parallel internal investigation in order to ascertain the flaws in its own procedures, but what I can't imagine is failing to alert the police.
