Superintendent: Arlington 'Does Not Sanction the Use of Seclusion'

Instead, the district utilizes 'Therapeutic Crisis Intervention,' according to Superintendent Kathleen Bodie.

The Arlington Public Schools “does not sanction the use of seclusion as a behavior management technique,” according to Superintendent Kathleen Bodie. Bodie addressed the issue of “seclusion” at last Thursday’s School Committee meeting, as it’s recently been a hot topic in Lexington after a parent painted a disturbing picture of his daughter’s treatment while she was a kindergartner in the district, in a New York Times op-ed piece Saturday, Sept. 8. The Lexington parent, Bill Lichtenstein, wrote that his daughter, who had speech and language delays, was shut away in a “seclusion room” when she was a 5-year-old kindergartner.
