Traffic Advisory: Broadway Closed from Warren to Franklin

Seek alternate routes.

Broadway is closed again today (Wednesday, July 18) from Warren Street to Franklin Street due to paving.

Thunderstorms Possible Later Today

The National Weather Service forecasts call for thunderstorms in Arlington, which could bring rain and wind but are also expected to break the heat.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Arlington and surrounding communities with severe thunderstorms in the forecast. Thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and into this evening. Storms could bring "damaging winds" and "large hail along with torrential downpours," according to NWS. NWS predicts southern New England will see the worst of the hazardous weather. The hazardous weather could break the heat. A low temperature of 65 degrees is expected in Arlington this evening. The high temperature tomorrow shouldn't exceed 83, according to forecasts.

The special election that will determine the fate of Arlington’s seasonal ban on gas-powered leaf blowers is Thursday, July 19. Residents will be asked to vote on the following question: “Shall the town vote to approve the action of the representative town meeting whereby it was voted to amend the Town Bylaws to prohibit the use of gas-powered leaf blowers on private property between May 15th and October 15th by a vote of 95 in the affirmative to 85 in the negative.” A “Yes” vote keeps the seasonal leaf-blower ban in place. A “No” vote overturns it. Polls will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and polling locations can be found here. Opponents of the ban have a tall task in front of them. Heat Advisory Issued for Arlington

Heat index values expected to top 100 degrees.

Loving the heat this summer? Well, it's continuing today but may reach dangerous levels. According to the National Weather Service, a heat advisory has been issued for Arlington today. The advisory will be in effect from 1-7 p.m. What does this mean for you? Residents can expect temperatures to peak in the mid 90s, with humidity levels reaching 70 degrees. The combined readings will make it feel closer to 102. Heat index values that reach 103 degrees will result in dangerous conditions for those spending prolonged periods of time outdoors. To reduce the risk of heat illness, the NWS recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room and out of the sun. I agree wholeheartedly with everything Peggy G. has to say. Furthermore, I don't think it all appropriate for liquor to be served in a family venue such as the neighborhood movie theater where children are always present. Liquor does not have to be associated and present with every form of entertainment.   more ›

Traffic Advisory: Broadway Closed from Warren to Franklin

In case you missed this enourmous sign, Broadway is closed from Warren Street to Franklin Street today due to paving. Traffic wasn't too bad in the area at about 1 p.m., but I'm sure residents on side roads, such as Everett Street, are seeing extra volume.

State Rep. Carlos Henriquez' Accuser Speaks Out

Katherine Gonzalves told reporters Wednesday that she has been telling the truth and will continue to do so.

Katherine Gonzalves, the 23-year-old Somerville woman who was allegedly held against her will and assaulted by State Rep. Carlos Henriquez early Sunday morning in Arlington, reaffirmed her accusations Wednesday at a press conference in Boston. “I assure you that the events contained in the police report happened,” said Gonzalves, who was accompanied by attorneys Richard Brody and Leonard Kesten and her mother, Beatriz Mamani, of Arlington.
