Can Police Search Your Cellphone Without a Warrant?

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled police don't need a search warrant to look at a cellphone's call list after arresting the phone's owner. As courts around the country grapple with the issue, tell us: is this reasonable search and seizure?

What's the difference between personal information and correspondence you have physically stored in your home, and similar information that's on your cellphone? And what should police have access to without a warrant? It's a question that courts across the nation are dealing with it and one that arose here in Massachusetts on Wednesday, when the Supreme Judicial Court ruled that police don't need a search warrant to look at the call list of a person's cellphone during while searching that person's personal property after an arrest. However, in writing the court's opinion for Commonwealth vs. Demetrius A. Phifer, Justice Margot Botsford cited other court cases that raise questions about the extent that law enforcement officials can access …

Social media brings us dog lovers closer than ever.

New dog owners frequently comment that getting a dog has suddenly earned them introductions to people they’ve lived amongst for years without previously having had much contact. Even neighbors without dogs often pause to admire a new four-pawed family member ambling down the block with its people. It does seem that many of us dog owners tend to gravitate towards one another, like members of a secret society. I think that’s especially true when our dogs are of the same breed. I’ll at least smile and nod at anyone with their dog, but whenever I see a person with a borzoi (like my dogs, Tatsu and Skylar), I’m compelled to overcome my shyness and strike up a conversation. Week in Review: High School Student Arrested, Town Manager's Retirement Party

A Middlesex prosecutor is honored for his service as a Marine, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy to open doors in town and more from this week's newsmakers in Arlington.

An Arlington High School student was arrested and charged with assault and battery on a police officer after the student allegedly became disruptive, resulting in the use of pepper spray by police. Middlesex County Assistant District Attorney Terence Kiernan was honored by local and state officials for his service as a Marine in Afghanistan, where he just returned from after serving since 2011.  And town officials on Thursday threw a retirement party for outgoing Town Manager Brian Sullivan, who worked as Arlington’s top administrator for eight years and is set to retire later this month.
