Stratton Elementary School has a new principal. Michael Hanna, an elementary school principal in Marblehead, recently accepted the position, the Arlington Public Schools announced earlier this morning. “We are very pleased to welcome [Hanna] to Arlington,” Superintendent Kathleen Bodie said in a statement. “[He] brings a leadership style that is approachable and thoughtful, along with a good sense of humor.” Hanna, who will start July 1, has led Marblehead’s Village School, a public 4-6 grade elementary school, since 2009. Three finalists remain in the search for the new Stratton School principal, according to a press release from the Arlington Public Schools on Wednesday. The three, a principal and two assistant principals, all from outside the district, are in the process of meeting with district administrators and Stratton faculty and parents, according to the release. Kathleen Bodie's budget would cut 16 teaching assistants but proposes hiring an assistant superintendent and principals at the high school and Stratton Elementary.
Arlington Public Schools on Thursday presented to the School Committee the first draft of the school district's budget, which assumes a 3.6 percent increase in revenue for fiscal year 2013. Superintendent Kathleen Bodie said the priorities of this year's budget focus on maintaining level services, expanding Special Education programmatic needs and restoring administrative capacity district-wide, among others. Bodie said she's hoping to also anticipate potential budgetary impact of contract negotiations and provide some teaching staff reserve, in case of enrollment increases. ID Theft in Canada On Friday morning, an Ernest Road resident told police someone had spent more than $400 using his credit card somewhere in Canada. Arlington Police are following up in the investigation. Student Buys Stolen iPod On Friday morning, Police caught what appears to be a Stratton Elementary student buying a stolen iPod for $50. According to the report, an officer witnessed a student buying an older iPod from another student. The officer asked to look the item. He later found out it had been stolen. Police recorded the incident address as 120 Ronald Road. The only school in that vicinity is Stratton Elementary School. The stolen iPod ranges in price from $260 to $303, according to police. Vandalism at Stratton School Arlington police were called to investigate vandalism at Stratton Elementary School, where someone spray-painted “NIGER” and “FUCK U FUCK U” on a window at the school. According to the police report, the incident happened at some point over the weekend. The graffiti also included drawings of a penis and testicles, police said. Project will include replacement of windows and the heating system at Stratton Elementary School.
Editor’s note: The following is a press release from the town of Arlington, edited to conform to Arlington Patch’s editorial standards. Later this month, officials will begin replacing windows and the heating system at Stratton Elementary School. The project will run from June 27 until mid-August, and it will include demolition, deliveries and work on the building exterior. Construction is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Officials said the project should be completed before the next academic year. The project is eligible for reimbursement form the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

Parents told the School Committee this week they worry efficiencies are being made at their expense as a result of Thompson rebuild project.
Stratton Elementary School parents are saying that they’re ready to welcome the Thompson Elementary School community with open arms, but some say efficiencies are being made at their expense. “The gap between Stratton and (the district’s) other elementary schools has grown wider,” said Chris Carmody, co-president of Stratton’s PTO. Carmody and other parents seemed most concerned that retiring Stratton Principal Alan Brown is being replaced with a half-time position. I agree!! What is the justification for this considering there is already a school board, a CFO, how many principals, and how many administrative staff?? There may not be a need for all the teaching assistants but do we really need a assistant superintendent!! Does this not confirm in part what those against the prop 2 1/2 override where saying??
