The supermarket is opening at the former Johnnie’s Foodmaster site in West Somerville.
The new Stop & Shop at the former Johnnie’s Foodmaster site in West Somerville will open on Friday, June 21, according to an announcement from the supermarket chain. The Stop & Shop is at 105 Alewife Brook Parkway, just across the Arlington town line and about 2.5 miles from the Arlington Stop & Shop at 905 Mass. Ave. Johnnie’s Foodmaster closed all 10 of its locations in November, including the one at 808 Mass. Ave. in Arlington, which is set to become a Whole Foods. The new Stop & Shop will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, according to the announcement. In January, we reported that Stop & Shop had acquired the lease to the former Johnnie’s Foodmaster site in West Somerville, just across the Arlington town line. At that time, the supermarket chain wasn’t disclosing its plans for the property, but now it appears a Stop & Shop is, in fact, moving in. Construction recently began on the building’s façade, at 105 Alewife Brook Parkway, and signs reading, “Coming Soon! Stop & Shop Supermarket,” popped up in the parking lot as well. The Stop & Shop will only be about 2.5 miles from the Arlington Stop & Shop at 905 Mass. Ave. The old Johnnie’s Foodmaster site in Arlington, at 808 Mass. Ave., is set to become a Whole Foods. Is Stop & Shop planning to open a store across the street from East Arlington, or does it have other plans for the former West Somerville Johnnie's?
Stop & Shop has acquired the lease to the former Johhnie's Foodmaster site in West Somerville, just across Alewife Brook Parkway from the Arlington town line, but the supermarket company has not announced what it plans to do with the site. "I don't have any news I can share yet," said Suzi Robinson, a spokesperson for Stop & Shop's New England Division. She said she's hoping to announce news about the site sometime during the week of Jan. 28. The Johnnie's at 105 Alewife Brook Parkway in West Somerville closed in November of 2012, along with the company's nine other locations in Eastern Massachusetts, including the one at 808 Mass. Nana, I think that S&S in Arlington has much better produce than Foodmaster ever had. Theirs was the worst. But I still shopped there for many other things as they were cheaper than S&S and liked the family feel of the store. I've never heard anyone complain about the S&S produce, just their prices. I am also looking forward to the new S&S. Better parking and better access. Not too far from where…   more ›
