The eighth-seeded Arlington High softball team will host No. 9 Melrose at 4 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Division 2 North bracket, while Arlington Catholic, the No. 12 seed, will travel to No. 5 Amesbury for a 3:45 p.m. contest. In their first season in the Middlesex League, the Spy Ponders finished in a three-way tie atop the standings, as they, Lexington and Reading all had 7-3 league records. The Spy Ponders went 14-6 overall and beat league foe Melrose 11-4 in the teams’ only showdown. Arlington enters postseason play having won seven of its last nine games. Melrose (12-8) is in the midst of a four-game winning streak. The Cougars went 13-7 during the regular season. Amesbury, of the Cape Ann League, went 16-4.

NORTH READING—One run per inning in the opening innings of the game proved all the North Reading High School girls softball team needed to defeat Arlington Catholic, 3-2, in the North Division 2 Quarter Finals of the MIAA tournament. "This game was won by hits," said North Reading coach Rusty Russell. The Hornets (No. 11, 13-8) were hitting right from the get-go, allowing Shelby Carney to score in the top of the first inning.
