The men then took off in a gold minivan, the coach told police. The two men, one with a “large sized video camera,” were sitting on the hill, according to the coach. She said that when she went over to approach them, one of them walked to the gold minivan, which had Ontario plates. That man then came back and told the other one to leave too while she continued walking toward him, she said. The coach was able to get the minivan’s plate number, but a police check came back with no matching record. The coach told police that due …

Letter: New Slides at Robbins Farm Park to be Officially Unveiled Saturday

The Friends of Robbins Farm Park is hosting a 'thank you' celebration for the community at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The following is a Letter to the Editor from Christian Klein of Friends of Robbins Farm Park, Community Events. Last year, we were able to replace our beloved hill slides through the generous support of our members, our community and our town. This project involved a unique partnership between the Friends of Robbins Farm Park and the Arlington Recreation Department, where we each agreed to raise half of the funds required to replace the slides. Not only did we reach out goal, through your efforts, we exceeded it. (The additional funds have been placed in an isolated account dedicated to the future maintenance of the slides.) This is deserving of a celebration! We are hosting a party in honor of our new slides on Saturday, May 12, at 4 p.m…

Ice Cream Heartache

Dear Brigham’s, please don’t go.

When I was in third grade, I was on a pathetically bad Little League baseball team in my hometown of Lexington. We were so bad, in fact, that our coach promised to take us all to Chadwick’s for an infamous “Belly Buster” if we ever won a game. Now Chadwick’s was an old-timey ice cream parlor/restaurant near the Waltham town line, and the “Belly Buster,” well, it was an 18-scoop (if my memory’s correct) behemoth of a sundae that, after some extremely loud drumming and dinging of a bell, was carried out to your table on a stretcher. The Brigham’s in Arlington Heights, which got seized by the state Tuesday for overdue taxes, may not have this same pomp and circumstance (trust me, it was even more ridiculous than it sounds), but its simpler …

Thanks Joe, appreciate the comments. Good to hear someone else remember Chadwick's. I don't recall Buttrick's. These days, in the summer, I like to drive west to Kimball's or Bedford Farms for my ice cream if I have the time.   more ›

Sledding Perils

Lainey slides out of bounds.

My daughter Lainey is five years old and I love her. We recently went sledding at Robbins Farm Park. The snow fell hard and the Volkswagon barely ascended the slippery hills. I parked, grabbed the sleds and we marched to the park’s peak. “This is steep!” Lainey hesitated. “Come on, kid,” I scoffed. “You just skied. This is nothing!” Lainey’s friend, Diane, and her dad, Bob, had joined us. Diane didn’t hesitate. “Let’s go, Lainey!” she yelled. They jumped on Diane’s blue sled. “If you might hit something,” Bob advised,  “jump off the sled!” “Okay,” the girls chimed and I pushed them downhill. Bob and I watched the girls accelerate and veer directly toward a metal trashcan. Before I could yell eject, the girls jumped off their sled and …
