I live in the College area and in the last week I have had four solicitors without permits at my door. They have been very annoying. When I do not hear the bell they pound on the glass and do not stop until someone answers. Somone came to my house at 8:30 pm last night. Who would come at the hour. thought the town banned door to door solicitation many years ago. It is the beginning of spring I …   more ›

Town Meeting Defeats 'Accessory Apartments' Article

A recap of Town Meeting's third session on Monday.

After a slow start last week, Town Meeting got rolling Monday, as members addressed 17 articles, including one on “accessory apartments” and three on the meeting itself. Members have now taken up 25 of the meeting’s 72 articles through three sessions, leaving 47 to go when they reconvene at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, in Town Hall Auditorium. “Accessory Apartments” On Monday, members picked up right where they left off, debating Article 8, a zoning bylaw amendment that would have allowed “accessory apartments,” or small, contained apartments in single-family-home districts by special permit, had it not been defeated. After debating the article for about an hour last Wednesday, April 25, members did so again for about 20 minutes on Monday …

Cremated Remains a No Go at Cooke's Hollow

A recap of Town Meeting's second session on Wednesday.

Cremated remains won’t be entombed in stone walls at Cooke’s Hollow – at least not for another year. After more than an hour-and-a-half of debate Wednesday night, Town Meeting members voted down a zoning bylaw amendment, Article 9, that could have led to such a scenario at the conservation area. “Arlington should be for the living, not the dead,” said Precinct 6’s Bill Kaplan, who opposed the motion. The amendment, put forth by the Redevelopment Board, needed a two-thirds majority to pass and came up 39 votes short, with 75 members voting for it, 95 against. If passed, the amendment would have allowed cremated remains to be buried or immured on parcels of land in the town’s Open Space districts that are under the control of the …

'Mixed-Use' Permit Defeated on Town Meeting's Opening Night

A recap of the first night of Town Meeting.

A zoning bylaw amendment that, according to the Redevelopment Board, was intended to preserve and encourage business use in most of the town’s business districts through a special “mixed-use” permit was defeated Monday by a voice vote on the first night of Town Meeting in Town Hall Auditorium. After more than an hour of debate, the article, Article 7, which was brought forth by the Redevelopment Board, failed to get the necessary two-thirds majority – and quite possibly would have been defeated in a simple-majority vote, as the “no” voters appeared to have the slight edge in the voice vote. The new “mixed-use” permit, which would have allowed business use on the ground floor and residential use above, was meant as a tool to create growth …
