Overnight Parking Question to Go Before Voters in April

Although the ballot question is non-binding, its results could lead to action.

The Board of Selectmen approved the wording Monday for the non-binding ballot question on overnight parking. As a result, Arlington voters will be presented with the following question, verbatim, at the polls at the Town Elections on Saturday, April 6. Question (#). This question is not binding. The board approved the wording 4-0 after a brief discussion, in which the wording was slightly altered. Selectman Diane Mahon was not present at the meeting. Selectman Steven Byrne, who proposed the idea of the question, said Monday that the results of the non-binding question will be analyzed. “I think this is a very strong way to move forward,” he said. Even though the question is non-binding, the board could take action based off its results. …

Selectmen to Vote on Overnight Parking Ballot Question Tonight

The ballot question would be non-binding but could lead to action being taken.

The Board of Selectmen will vote tonight on a non-binding ballot question on overnight parking, according to its agenda. If the board approves the wording of the question (it’s already supported it in theory), the question will go before voters at the Town Elections on Saturday, April 6. Basically, the board wants to know if residents would like to see the town relax its overnight-parking ban. Selectman Steven Byrne proposed the idea of the question last meeting. At that time, selectmen disagreed on possible actions, or lack thereof, that should be taken after the vote. Absolutely! It would make our life so much easier as we wouldn't have to tandem park our cars all the time. We have two cars since my husband I I both work full-time at opposite ends of the earth, but we have to constantly move each other's cars out before we can go to work in the morning!   more ›

Selectmen Pursuing Non-Binding Ballot Question on Overnight Parking

The question was Selectman Steven Byrne's idea.

The Board of Selectmen unanimously decided Monday night to pursue putting a non-binding ballot question on overnight parking to voters in April. The wording of the question still needs to be developed by Town Counsel Juliana Rice and then approved by the board, but basically, the board wants to know if residents would be in favor of “relaxing” the town’s overnight-parking ban. The question was Selectman Steven Byrne’s idea. “I think it’s an appropriate way to gage residents’ feelings and then set appropriate policies,” he said Monday. Byrne wanted to ask residents if they would be in favor of removing the town’s overnight-parking ban, which would then allow residents to park on one side of the street overnight. He wanted to have it so that…

I agree, why can't we have resident permit + 1 guests permit (similarly as in Cambridge). Then ban visitors without permit whether it is day or night and collect the revenue from that. Why should I be paying a fine when I have my parent or girlfriend visiting. I already pay enough taxes to the town each year (property, car excise). And I can't even have overnight guest.   more ›

Town Officials to Look Into Parking

A recap of Town Meeting's fourth session on Wednesday.

At its fourth session Wednesday night, Town Meeting passed the halfway mark, in terms of the number of articles addressed. The town’s legislative body, which has now taken up 42 of the 72 articles on the Town Meeting Warrant, voted in the affirmative on all 12 articles that were discussed, accepted the Board of Selectmen’s recommendation of no action on four more articles (Articles 31, 33, 35 and 53) and received a report from Town Manager Adam Chapdelaine (Article 32). Most of the articles approved Wednesday were pretty standard articles that are approved every year in unanimous or near unanimous votes, such as the articles that appropriate funds to the town’s committees and commissions, celebrations and other areas (Articles 42, 43, 48, …
