AC Girls Hockey Hoping for Garden Party

Lady Cougars play St. Mary's of Lynn for Division 1 championship at Boston's TD Garden.

It's been a good season for Arlington Catholic girls teams. On Sunday, the Lady Cougar hockey team hopes to make it a great one. Arlington Catholic, the bracket's No. 4 seed, faces off against third-ranked St. Mary's of Lynn at 9 a.m. inside the TD Garden in Boston with a Division 1 state championship on the line. This comes less than a week after the AC girls basketball team battled Reading in the North Division 2 championship contest. The Cougars' run to the title tilt began with a lopsided win over Barnstable in the first round, a 4-0 decision. Then in the quarterfinal, AC tipped Woburn in a shootout, escaping with a 3-2 victory. Finally, the locals snagged a second consecutive dramatic win, a 3-2 overtime decision in the semifinals …

Arlington Catholic Ready for Showdown with Reading

Arlington Catholic girls basketball squares off against unbeaten Reading in North Division 2 final.

Two years ago, Reading thumped Arlington Catholic by 20 points in the regular season. But the Cougars bounced back when it mattered most snagging a 20-point victory of its own in the rematch when the postseason rolled around. Head coach Dave Brady's charges are hoping for a similar result on Saturday when they look to continue their title defense on the hardwood of Lowell's Tsongas Center in the North Division 2 title game. On February 19, Reading cruised to a 58-32 home win, one of just three setbacks the second-seeded Cougars suffered all year. Not only did the Lady Rockets rip off a 22-0 record to get to the sectional title game, but they also did so in convincing fashion. Only one tilt was decided by less than 16 points all year for …

Semi is Sweet for Arlington Catholic Hoops [VIDEO]

Cougars advance to North Division 2 final against unbeaten Reading thanks to blowout win over Wilmington.

Wilmington sophomore Carli Brent slashed to the rim and dumped in a layup that brought the Wildcats within one point early in the second quarter. Then Arlington Catholic took over, and never looked back. The Cougars went on an 18-4 run to close out the first half following Brent’s basket with 6:35 left in the frame. The defending champions went on to a 57-34 win in the North Division 2 semifinal at Whittier Tech in Haverhill on Wednesday night. “My hat’s off to them. That’s why they’re the defending state champs,” said Wilmington head coach Jay Keane. “They’re an outstanding basketball team that’s well coached. Once their three-point shooter started hitting, we knew we were in trouble.” Following the Brent layup that made the score 17-16, …

Wilmington Readies for Battle With Arlington Catholic

Teams will play in North Division 2 semifinal in Haverhill on Wednesday night, with a berth in the sectional final on the line.

If the Wilmington girls basketball wants to make it to the championship game, they're going to have to beat the champs to get there. After holding on to beat Waltham and doing the same against Gloucester, the Lady Wildcats are in the North Division 2 semifinal game against defending state champion Arlington Catholic. The game tips off at 7 p.m. inside Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School in Haverhill, with a berth in the sectional final on the line. "I think with only one day to prepare, we just have to work on some things that we need to work on as a team for ourselves, and just go out there and defend like we did (against Gloucester)," said Wilmington head coach Jay Keane following his team's 50-47 quarterfinal win. …

Arlington Sports Round Up

A look back at the week that was in Arlington athletics.

We’ve finally reached the end of the 2011 spring high school season and all of the Arlington High School and Arlington Catholic High School teams have finished off their years. Some of the spring teams closed out successful seasons while others turned the page and look toward improvement in 2012. The lone team remaining for both schools this past week was the Arlington Catholic High School boys lacrosse team as the Cougars continued their quest for a state championship. Last year, AC made it to the Division 3 North Quarterfinals before seeing their season come to an end, and was looking to improve on that this year. After knocking off CCL rival Matignon in the preliminary round, the Cougars moved on to square off with Abington in the first…

Cougars Fall to North Reading in Quarter Finals

The Arlington Catholic softball team loses, 3-2, to the Hornets in the North Division 2 MIAA Tournament.

NORTH READING—One run per inning in the opening innings of the game proved all the North Reading High School girls softball team needed to defeat Arlington Catholic, 3-2, in the North Division 2 Quarter Finals of the MIAA tournament. "This game was won by hits," said North Reading coach Rusty Russell.  The Hornets (No. 11, 13-8) were hitting right from the get-go, allowing Shelby Carney to score in the top of the first inning. The run gave her team the quick 1-0 advantage.  Arlington Catholic (No. 14, 12-9) was unable to respond during their chance at bat. North Reading, on the other hand, was just getting started. A one-out triple by co-captain Brittany Venezia in the top of the second, followed by an RBI fielder's choice by Nicole …

Arlington Catholic Knocks Off Abington in Overtime Thriller

The Arlington Catholic boys lacrosse team advanced to the state quarterfinals with a 10-9 overtime win over Abington.

BELMONT—After the Arlington Catholic High School boys lacrosse team finished off Abington High School in exciting fashion, ending the Green Wave’s season with a 10-9 overtime win, head coach Dan Brothers spoke to his team. At the end of his post-game talk, he did something that he usually doesn’t do at the close of games. He handed out a game ball. The recipient was sophomore Zach Blanch. Blanch, perhaps the unlikeliest of heroes, stepped up when his team needed it most, scoring an impressive goal in overtime to keep the Cougars’ championship dreams alive. Brothers handed the brace-faced teenager the game ball and told him to hold onto it, as it is one of the biggest goals he’ll likely ever score during his high school lacrosse career. As …

Robinson Captures Fourth State Crown

Arlington High's Rebecca Robinson won the 400-meter dash Saturday by more than a second.

Arlington High School junior Rebecca Robinson blew away the field Saturday in the 400-meter dash at the MIAA Massachusetts All-State Meet at Bridgewater State University to claim the fourth individual state title of her high school career. Robinson, who was the heavy favorite coming in, won the one-lap race by more than a second over Lynn Classical junior Hulerie McGuffie. Robinson ran 56.22 seconds to McGuffie’s 57.35. Last week, Robinson ran a personal-best 55.03 seconds to set a meet record at the Eastern Massachusetts Division 2 championships. The All-State Meet record of 54.98 seconds was set by Franklin’s Jennifer Vendetti in 1999. In addition to her most recent title, Robinson won the 55-meter and 300-meter dashes at this year’s …
