This Week's Blog Roll: Real Estate, Eliminating Racism, Winter Food Fun

Our bloggers are sizzling with great commentary. Check out some of Arlington Patch's local voices.

Have you checked out some of the posts from our stellar team of bloggers? Here are some excerpts from this week: A couple of weeks ago, Arlington Patch welcomed a new blogger, Realtor Steve McKenna. This week, he came back with an interesting question: Is Arlington in the middle of a real estate match made in heaven? "Rents are rising and single-family homes are still out of reach for many young buyers, making the multi-family market and the boomerang buyer a possible real estate match made in heaven." Ken Girard wrote about Martin Luther King Jr. day, wondering if there is a lasting way that each of us can help eliminate racism: "Racism is a plague that knows no borders. A plague that needs to be and must be healed for progress and all of…

This Week's Blog Roll: Health, Keeping a Toddler Busy and New Year

Check out some of Arlington Patch's local voices.

Have you checked out some of the posts from our stellar team of bloggers? Here are some excerpts from this week: Ken Girard recently watched the 1925 silent film version of Ben-Hur, which brought him to think about "techno-prejudice" and eventually health: "After viewing the film—after experiencing it—I recognized my presumption was really a “techno-prejudice” that would have kept me ignorant of the superb qualities of the original. I had to ask myself how many other things in life am I—are we—making similar assumptions about? "For instance, each day the media regularly reports on new medical technologies that are being promoted as solutions to many of the terrible health problems that humanity faces.  It certainly is fascinating and kudos…

This Week's Blog Roll: Holiday Lights, Foodie Lists and a Late Bat Mitzvah

Check out some of Arlington Patch's local voices.

Have you checked out some of the posts from our stellar team of bloggers? Here are some excerpts from this week: With the holiday frenzy, Ken Girard took a moment to think about the meaning of the season:  "But these holidays—all of them, not just Christmas—are more than families and friends getting together, breaking bread and exchanging gifts. Far more. "Their significance has a deeper and more profound meaning. A meaning that has great implications for all us—regardless of race, gender, age, creed or doctrine." "It’s the recognition that there is an all-encompassing Truth. A truth that is symbolized in many traditions. And for me as a Christian, it’s the Christmas idea of the Nativity—a new birth of spiritual light into our individual …

This Week's Blog Roll: Power Cords, a Debt-Free Life and Health Care

Check out some of Arlington Patch's local voices.

Have you checked out some of the posts from our stellar team of bloggers? Here are some excerpts from this week: Ken Girard recently made a simple change in his audio system and found out it can make a big difference. And, the blogger explains, a similar change in our thinking can equally affect our health outcomes: "This got me thinking today. How often do we look for upgrades to our life—upgrades that are costly, time-consuming and often unsatisfying—when just a simple shift, a different connection, is all it takes?  How often do we just accept the current popular wisdom about every aspect of our lives?" With the exception of her mortgage, blogger Judy Mintz lives a debt-free life. Then why does she continue to worry about money? The …

Week in Review

Week in Review: Body Found in Spy Pond, Breach of Confidentiality at Schools

Joe Curro becomes the first candidate for Board of Selectmen, police stop a drug deal near Arlington High School and Post Office closures to be pushed back.

Authorities this week identified the man whose body was found in Spy Pond on Tuesday. The deceased is Cameron Raudonis-Blicker, 23, of Derry, N.H. A cause of death has not been determined. School Committee member Joe Curro became the first candidate to take out papers to run for the Board of Selectmen. In an interview, Curro said he wants to be the voice of Arlington Public Schools parents, following the expected 2012 departure of  Selectman Annie LaCourt. And Superintendent Kathleen Bodie has been asked to review the school district’s protocols on student confidentiality, after an official mistakenly distributed a redistricting map showing approximate addresses of special education homes. Here are more of this week's essential news from …

This Week's Blog Roll: Happiness Equals Longer Life, Gifting Foodies and Family Matters

Check out some of Arlington Patch's local voices.

Have you checked out some of the posts from our stellar team of bloggers? Here are some excerpts from this week: Can happiness equal longer life? Ken Girard explains: "Guess what? Even accounting for those who had medical conditions or were at risk, such as smokers, those that were happier lived longer."   Our newest blogger, Amy Copperman, wrote her second foodie blog post this week. Last week, she shared a terrific cookie recipe. This week, she is offering some gift options for the foodies in your life: "So it’s mid-December and if you’re like me, you are still working through your gift list. I was at the East Arlington First Lights celebration last Saturday and found several gift options for the food-obsessed." Judy Mintz explains some …

This Week's Blog Roll: Cycling in December, Prayer Closets and Cookie Time

Check out some of Arlington Patch's local voices.

Have you checked out some of the posts from our stellar team of bloggers? Here are some excerpts from this week: Ken Girard wrote about how a biking in December and how taking a few moments to be quiet can provide much-needed inspiration in life: "In this increasingly hectic society that we find ourselves in, with the huge demands on our time coming at us from every direction, it’s helpful to take even a few minutes to retire into our 'closet'—to allow ourselves to feel the spiritual peace, calm, and inspiration that comes from doing so. And the effects of those moments can radiate outward to every aspect of our lives—including our health." Amy Copperman joined Arlington Patch's blog roll this week, and she will write about food—where to …

This Week's Blog Roll: Gratitude, Holiday Shopping Tips and Everybody's a Critic

Check out some of Arlington Patch's local voices.

Have you checked out some of the posts from our stellar team of bloggers? Here are some excerpts from this week: Ken Girard reminded us of the importance of Thanksgiving, and how being grateful can be a healthy choice for our lives: "Thanksgiving evokes so many ideas in so many people. The Pilgrims. Images of New England. Feasts of turkey, gravy, cranberries, pies. Time with family and friends. The holiday season. "And yet for others, who don’t have those resources and luxuries, it can be a very difficult time—a time of loneliness, hunger, homelessness." Malcolm Hamilton offered a few holiday shopping tips from the FBI: "In advance of the holiday season, the FBI reminds shoppers to beware of cyber criminals and their aggressive and …

This Week's Blog Roll: What Are We Overlooking in Health and Memory Lane is a Lonely Road

Check out some of Arlington Patch's local voices.

Have you checked out some of the posts from our stellar team of bloggers? Here are some excerpts from this week: Ken Girard took an unexpected trip to a used bookstore that got him thinking about how much we may be overlooking that could benefit us all: "How much of great value are we missing as we careen through our modern daily lives? We have information coming at us from every angle—TV, radio, print media, and the Internet. And if you’re like me, trying to keep track of all that’s happening is a major effort. There’s a point where it’s easy to feel overload." Judy Mintz got kicked out of her parents' house. Technically, they kicked out her stuff out of the house: "It’s true that I bought my first house over twenty years ago but I’ve …

This Week's Blog Roll: Prayer for Veterans, No Do-Over in Life and Parents' Best Weapon

Check out some of Arlington Patch's local voices.

Have you checked out some of the posts from our stellar team of bloggers? Here are some excerpts from this week: In light of veteran's day, Ken Girard wrote a beautiful prayer for our veterans: "For all who do return home, my prayer is that they’ll be able to feel a sense of peace about their actions. Not an uneasy truce, but a real inner peace that removes those visions from their thought and allows them to go on with their lives in productive, fulfilling and rewarding ways—ways that they’ve surely earned." Caroline Ronten writes about life and how we don't get a do-over:  "If I had a preference I would not have gotten cancer twice, maybe I would be richer, maybe I would be a size 6, 5'7" physically fit person who never has to work out …
