School Committee Picks Schlichtman

Former School Committee member Paul Schlichtman will fill former committee member Joseph Curro's seat until the Town Elections next April.

Paul Schlichtman was named to the Arlington School Committee Thursday night. After a 90-minute group interview session, Schlichtman, a former School Committee member, received the necessary four votes from the committee in the first round of the roll-call voting to rise above the field of five applicants. Schlichtman got the nod from members Cindy Starks, Jeff Thielman and Leba Heigham and chairwoman Kirsi Allison-Ampe. Member William Hayner voted for James Flanagan, who recently finished third behind Thielman and Starks in the Town Elections, and member Judson Pierce voted for Len Kardon, who is active in the advocacy groups FYArlington and the Arlington Special Education Parents Advisory Council (SEPAC). Six Seeking Curro's Former School Committee Seat

The committee is planning to select its new member immediately after interviews on Thursday, May 3.

Six people are in the running for the vacant seat on the School Committee. They are: A seventh person applied but did not meet the basic qualifications, as he or she was not a registered voter, according to School Committee chairwoman Kirsi Allison-Ampe. The six applicants will be interviewed by the School Committee at a special meeting from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday, May 3 in the committee’s room on the sixth floor of Arlington High School. Each applicant will be given the opportunity to make a three-minute opening statement and one-minute closing statement. The committee is planning to choose its new member that night, via majority vote. The new member will fill the seat, which was vacated by newly-elected Selectman Joseph Curro, until the …

That's not how things work. Had Curro stepped down then those votes would have been up for grabs. You are divining the intent of the voters by suggesting that Flanagan should get it since he came in third. There is no reason not to hold another election for this vacant seat.   more ›
