VIDEO: Arlington Catholic Girls’ Hockey Advances to State Semis

The defending state champion Arlington Catholic girls’ hockey team is back in the state semis. The seventh-seeded Cougars (16-4-2) reached the final four again Wednesday night by taking care of No. 2 Beverly Danvers (17-3-2) 4-0 in the Division 1 quarterfinals at O’Brien Rink in Woburn. “Getting by this round and moving onto the semifinals, it’s just another thing you look forward to, another gift that you’re given by your hard work,” Arlington Catholic coach Maggie Taverna said Wednesday. The Cougars advance to face No. 3 Westford (17-3-2) at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Chelmsford Forum. Today is Wednesday, Feb. 27. Here are five things you need to know: 1.) The eighth-seeded Arlington High boys’ hockey team will face No. 9 Melrose at 7:30 p.m. tonight at O’Brien Rink in Woburn (55 Locust St., adjacent to Joyce Middle School) in the preliminary round of the Division 1 North bracket. Arlington went 9-6-5 during the regular season, Melrose 10-7-4. Arlington lost to Melrose 7-0 on Jan. 26 in the teams’ only meeting this season. 2.) The Arlington High boys’ basketball team earned the No. 16 seed in the Division 2 North bracket with a 10-10 regular-season record. The Spy Ponders will host No. 17 Tewksbury (9-11) at 7 p.m. tonight in the bracket’s preliminary round, with the winning team moving on to face No. 1, undefeated Melrose (20-0). The Arlington Catholic boys’ basketball team got the No. 5 seed in the Division 3 North bracket with a 14-6 regular-season record. The Arlington High and Arlington Catholic football teams will square off at 10:15 a.m. this morning at Peirce Field. The Spy Ponders enter the game at 3-7, with wins over Wilmington, Winchester and Belmont so far this season. The Cougars are 1-8; their only win came against Archbishop Williams three weeks ago. Last year, the Cougars won the annual showdown 28-7. The year before, it was the Spy Ponders who took the game, 42-14. Arlington Catholic Girls' Volleyball Team Makes Division 2 North Finals

The second-seeded Cougars took care of No. 6 Weston Thursday, but now their toughest test yet looms ahead.

Today is Friday, Nov. 9. Here are five things you need to know: 1.) The second-seeded Arlington Catholic girls’ volleyball team advanced to the Division 2 North finals Thursday with a 3-0 win over No. 6 Weston at Arlington High School. The Cougars (20-2) will face top-seeded Melrose (23-1) at 4 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence High School, with a trip to represent the north in the Division 2 State tournament on the line. Other than a 3-2 loss against Newton North in late October, Melrose has yet to lose a set this season. Melrose beat Arlington Catholic 3-0 in late September. 2.) While you were busy voting Tuesday, the second-seeded Arlington Catholic girls’ volleyball team was busy digging, setting and spiking its way past No. 7 O’Bryant 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the Division 2 North bracket. The Cougars, who entered postseason play 18-2, will face No. 6 Weston at 7 p.m. tonight at Arlington High School in the bracket’s semifinals. 2.) Softball Teams to Open Postseason Play Thursday

The Arlington High softball team will be at home, while Arlington Catholic will travel to Amesbury.

The eighth-seeded Arlington High softball team will host No. 9 Melrose at 4 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Division 2 North bracket, while Arlington Catholic, the No. 12 seed, will travel to No. 5 Amesbury for a 3:45 p.m. contest. In their first season in the Middlesex League, the Spy Ponders finished in a three-way tie atop the standings, as they, Lexington and Reading all had 7-3 league records. The Spy Ponders went 14-6 overall and beat league foe Melrose 11-4 in the teams’ only showdown. Arlington enters postseason play having won seven of its last nine games. Melrose (12-8) is in the midst of a four-game winning streak. The Cougars went 13-7 during the regular season. Amesbury, of the Cape Ann League, went 16-4.

Baseball Teams to Host Playoff Games Thursday

The Arlington High and Arlington Catholic baseball teams will both be in action at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The Arlington High and Arlington Catholic baseball teams have both secured home games in the first round of their respective playoffs. The Spy Ponders are the No. 8 seed in the Division 2 North bracket and will host No. 9 Marblehead at 4 p.m. Thursday at Spy Pond Field. The Ponders finished their first regular season in the Middlesex League 12-8, while Marblehead went 11-9 in the Northeastern Conference. Marblehead did go 8-2 in its last 10 games, however. The Cougars earned the No. 7 seed in the Division 3 North bracket with a 13-7 record during the regular season (which includes a 2-1 win over Arlington in the Holovak and Coughlin Tournament last weekend). They’ll host No. 10 Weston (11-9), of the Dual County League, at 4 p.m. Thursday …
