Restaurant Openings and Closings in Arlington, Somerville and Lexington

A look at the area restaurant scene.

Arlington In our last “Restaurant Openings and Closings” column, we highlighted Menotomy Grill and Tavern, a historically named tavern set for the old Hollywood Video site in East Arlington. Well, this time around, we’re highlighting another new historically named tavern, Cooper’s Tavern, which is going to replace the recently closed Gemma Ristorante at 319 Broadway in Arlington Center. Gemma’s owners, Ilir and Melaiza Velagoshti, are behind Cooper’s Tavern, which will be a “casual American style restaurant,” they told the Board of Selectmen. “It is more appropriate and needed in [the] business district,” they said of the change. Judy I have lived here long enough to know that the WRONG TURN has brought these junkies to our town .. There are two schools with in an arms reach of this place.. I have an Idea lets put this place right next to the new Thompson school . Let's see how many people will be up in arms..? We they wouldn't have to go far for a fix .. Gemma’s Owners Opening ‘Casual American Style Restaurant’

Gemma’s name change was approved at Monday’s Board of Selectmen’s meeting.

The owners of the recently closed Gemma Ristorante are behind Cooper’s Tavern, according to paperwork filed with the Board of Selectmen’s office. Ilir and Melaiza Velagoshti wrote to the board that they’re planning to operate a “casual American style restaurant” at the former Gemma site, 319 Broadway in Arlington Center, as they feel “it is more appropriate and needed in [the] business district.” ----- Do you agree with the owners? I worked at Gemma for a long time and I would agree with some things but disagree with others. For one, the owners are not bad people. They immigrated to the United States and worked their tails off so that they can open their own business and were successful in doing so. Gemma Site Could Become ‘Cooper’s Tavern’

The requested change follows on the heels of a new historically named tavern set for East Arlington.

The recently closed Gemma Ristorante in Arlington Center might become “Cooper’s Tavern.” The change will be requested Monday night at the Board of Selectmen’s meeting, according to the meeting’s agenda. Cooper’s Tavern will be the second new historically named tavern to come before the board in less than a month.
