When Is Panera's Last Day?

You Pick 2's days are numbered in Arlington Heights.

You have limited time to get an asiago cheese bagel, order a “You Pick 2,” or “add a pastry item for 99 cents” in Arlington Heights. The Heights’ Panera Bread is closing for good at the end of the business day (10 p.m.) Tuesday, March 26, a company spokeswoman and an employee confirmed Friday. The company announced earlier this month that it would be closing the bakery, at 1398 Mass. Ave., after a 15-year run. At that time, a company spokeswoman said “it has been difficult to achieve the standards [the company believes] will meet customer expectations” at the Arlington location. After it’s gone, the four closest Paneras will be the one in Waltham at 1100 Lexington St., the two relatively new ones in Lexington Center (1684 Mass. Ave.) and …

What Is Going in at the Arlington Heights Busway?

See what's moving in.

By now you probably know, something's going on at the Arlington Heights Busway across from Panera. Four new windows, a door and another window-sized rectangle have been cut into the depot’s Mass. Ave.-facing mural, “Celebrating Arlington’s Past and Present.” Paul Revere? Gone. Uncle Sam? Gone. The “Entering Arlington” sign? Gone too, as are a number of Minutemen. But what exactly is up? What’s moving in? “The Right Spot Convenience Store,” a store sponsored by the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind Small Business Enterprise Program and the MBTA, according to a sign in one of the building’s newly constructed windows. The store won’t be any regular ol’ convenience store, it will be “a retail store especially designed to be managed by …

New Restaurant Approved for Summer Street

See what's moving into a long-vacant space.

A new Asian restaurant with a sushi bar is moving into two of the three long-vacant storefronts across from Summer Street Field. Sono restaurant received common victualler and all-alcohol licenses Monday from the Board of Selectmen in a unanimous vote. A common victualler license allows a business to serve food. The restaurant will occupy the two vacant storefronts to the right of 469-471 Summer St., leaving one vacant space between it and Arlington Cafe, which is actually a pizza place. It plans to open this June or July, its owner, Huanhuan Lin, wrote on his application for the licenses. The 1,807-square-foot restaurant is expected to seat 50, 40 at tables and 10 at the sushi bar, according to the application. It will not have a lounge …

New Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt Shop Coming to Arlington Center

The 'froyo' craze continues in Arlington.

A new self-serve frozen yogurt, or “froyo,” shop is coming to Arlington Center. The Board of Selectmen unanimously approved a common victualler, or operating, license for “Yummy’s” Monday night. The shop is going in at 474 Mass. Ave., the former home of Something Extra, a women’s boutique. The storefront is to the right of Sweet Chili. Aneesh Bhambri, a Burlington resident who owns the Sprint store in Arlington Center, as well as two others, is the man behind the shop. He previously owned eight Verizon stores, including the one in Arlington Center. Yummy’s is the second froyo shop slated for Arlington. Frozland Frozen Yogurt is moving into 882B Mass. Ave., across the street from Arlington High School, as well. Self-serve frozen yogurt has …

New East Arlington Deli Could Open by Week's End

The deli received its operating license Monday night.

A new East Arlington deli could be open by the end of this week, its owner told the Board of Selectmen Monday. Anthony’s East Side Deli’s owner, Anthony Masci, received his common victualler or operating license from the board Monday in a unanimous vote. The deli is moving into 159 Mass. Ave., the former home of Audio Video Plus. The storefront is at the corner of Mass. Ave. and Marathon Street in East Arlington's Capitol Square. About $125,000 went into renovating the space, according to Masci’s application. Masci, a lifelong Arlington resident who currently lives on Acton Street in the Heights, owned Maria’s Italian Cold Cuts from 2008-2010 when it was in Somerville’s Winter Hill neighborhood, according to his application. Masci told the…

Selectmen Oppose Bottled-Water Ban for Arlington

The board voted against the proposed ban Monday. However, Town Meeting could still pass it next month with a substitute motion.

The proposed bottled-water ban for Arlington will go to Town Meeting next month without the support of the Board of Selectmen. On Monday, the board unanimously recommended a vote of no action on the ban article, despite praising the efforts of the three Arlington High seniors who brought it forward. “I really commend you for what you’ve done here, for the work you’ve done, but I’m going against you,” board chairman Kevin Greeley told the three students, Amy Currul, Sonia Zacher and Marina Milan. Currul (pictured center) presented the article to the board Monday. “Buying soda should not be the natural alternative to buying bottled water,” Currul said to the ban’s critics. “Carrying a reusable water bottle should be the natural alternative…

Three New Businesses Looking to Come to Arlington

All three would serve food.

Three new businesses are set to go before the Board of Selectmen Monday evening, according to the board’s agenda. Sono Restaurant, Anthony’s East Side Deli and Yummy’s will be seeking common victualler or operating licenses. Sono will also be seeking an all-alcohol license. Also on the agenda: "Selectmen to Consider Two Controversial Warrant Articles Monday" Sono Restaurant Not much was known about the applicants Thursday evening. However, Sono would serve Asian cuisine, and it’s slated for 469 Summer St. (pictured bottom), the vacant storefront across from Summer Street Field. In June, Thomas Vakalfotis sought to open Arlington Heights Liquors there, but selectmen granted the two available licenses to Mystic Wine Shoppe and the Meat House…

Selectmen to Consider Two Controversial Warrant Articles Monday

Two issues that have been the talk of the town are set to go before the board.

The Board of Selectmen will consider two controversial Special Town Meeting warrant articles Monday evening, the bottled-water-ban and the leaf-blower-compromise articles, according to the agenda. Three Arlington High seniors, Amy Currul, Sonia Zacher and Marina Milan, submitted the bottled-water-ban article by petition, and they’ll also be the ones presenting the article to the board. The Board of Selectmen inserted the leaf-blower-compromise article, which was crafted by the 2012 Special Town Meeting Leaf Blower Committee. Both articles will be decided on by Town Meeting in late April. The Special Town Meeting portion of the regular Town Meeting starts on Wednesday, April 24, at 8 p.m. The board’s meeting is at 7:15 p.m. Monday, March 18…

I learned some things from this bottled water ban, so for me it was worth it whether it passes or not. 1. Always pick Dasani or Aquafina (tap water) over spring water (Poland Springs). 2. Never microwave food covered in plastic wrap. I did this almost every day. 3. You can't recycle plastic shopping bags or styrofoam. Somerville is currently trying to ban styrofoam, so that is probably the next …   more ›
