BU Student Remembered As 'Bright, Intelligent, Beautiful'

Boston University student Lingzi Lu died in Monday's Boston Marathon bombings, but her family and her university are hopeful her memory can inspire others.

Lingzi Lu’s family remembers her as the “joy of [their] lives,” an ambitious young woman, full of dreams and hopes and love for her friends and family. An outpouring of comments on various articles remembers her as an “amazing girl,” with a “beautiful smile.” All that spirit, all that life, was cut tragically short Monday, April 15, when Lu, 23, was killed in the bombing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, a terrorist act that also claimed the lives of 8-year-old Martin Richard of Dorchester, and 29-year-old Krystle ­Campbell, of Medford.  In an open letter, Lu’s family said Lu "was a bright and wonderful child." BU Professor on Probation after Domestic Abuse Charge

Pedro Lasarte, a Spanish professor at BU, was arrested last week at his home in Arlington for allegedly "bumping" a female victim with brass knuckles.

The Boston University professor arrested last week in Arlington on a domestic abuse charge has been placed on 18 months of probation, according to the Boston Globe. On Feb. 10, Pedro Lasarte, a Spanish professor, was arrested in his Arlington home after he allegedly scratched his girlfriend’s arm with a key and "bumped" her in the ribs with brass knuckles. He allegedly told the woman, “I know where to hit you with these where there won’t be a mark,” according to police.  Lasarte was charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and one count of carrying a dangerous weapon. Those charges were continued without a finding.  Lasarte's attorney, Ryan Caselden, said in court that Lasarte had "learned from his mistakes," …

Romance Studies Professor Allegedly Taps Woman with Brass Knuckles

The Boston University professor, who lives on Moulton Road, allegedly was upset that the woman was doing the dishes.

A Romance Studies professor at Boston University allegedly lightly “thumped” a woman in the ribs with brass knuckles Sunday afternoon after he became aggravated that she was doing the dishes. The woman told police that she was washing the dishes shortly after 3 p.m., and the professor got angry because he enjoys doing them at night. The professor said the woman put more than $3,000 worth of charges on his credit card without his authorization. He denied the alleged abuse. Pedro C. Lasarte, 65, of Moulton Road, was arrested by Arlington police on Moulton Road and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and carrying a dangerous weapon. Lasarte is listed as a Spanish professor in Boston University’s Romance Studies department…

Parent Vies for School Committee Seat

Candidate Matthew Pallett is concerned with the district's direction and wants to enact changes from the top.

A parent of two Arlington Public Schools students has pulled out papers to run for the School Committee, becoming the fourth candidate to show his intent to run for the committee's two open seats in this year's elections, the Town Clerk's Office confirmed Tuesday. Matthew Pallett, who has lived in Arlington for four years, said he first thought about running for School Committee when his family started having issues finding the support his special education child needs.
