Zocalo Cocina Mexicana is staying with owners Armida Amor and Ricardo Ramos, the Board of Selectmen announced Monday. In March, the Mexican restaurant on Broadway appeared to be headed to new owners, Nicolas and Maria Portillo and Jose Landaverde, of the newly-formed Arlington Restaurant Group. At the time, the Board of Selectmen even granted these new owners a common victualler license to operate the restaurant and a beer and wine license. However, on Monday, the board reversed these decisions, as the sale did not go through. The new owners had offered to buy the restaurant (the business assets, not the real estate) for $152,200, according to their license applications. See which intersection is getting a makeover courtesy of CVS.
The Mass. Ave. intersection with Jason and Mill streets is getting upgraded courtesy of CVS. The Board of Selectmen unanimously approved Monday a list of changes recommended by the Transportation Advisory Committee. The changes, which will “significantly improve overall safety and operations,” according to the committee, will cost about $42,000. However, CVS is footing the bill, as the pharmacy was required to put $50,000 toward improving the intersection as part of its special permit with the town to build its nearby store at 833 Mass. The narrow “Yes” vote on Question 1 hasn't swayed selectmen away from supporting the project’s current design.
The Board of Selectmen unanimously agreed Monday to send a letter to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation expressing its continued support for the Mass. Ave. Corridor Project, as it’s currently designed. At the request of Selectman Kevin Greeley, the board did so in response to the recent “Yes” vote on Question 1, which opponents of the current design viewed as an indictment on it. On Monday, Selectmen Steven Byrne and Joseph Curro Jr. called the non-binding ballot question “flawed,” and Greeley said there is “ample evidence” that the town wants the current project. “We’re ready,” Greeley said. “We need to do this, or we lose all of the money.” The project, which is expected to cost about $6.8 million, would be 80 percent …

Bill’s House of Pizza received its common victualler, or operating, license Monday from the Board of Selectmen in a 5-0 vote. Joe Meawad is proposing the pizza house for 1345 Mass. Ave. in Arlington Heights – the location went from I Chef to Napoli Kitchen in September. “I came to town because I really like Arlington,” Meawad told the board. Meawad already owns two pizza houses – Bill’s House of Pizza in Easton and Foxboro House of Pizza in Foxboro. He plans to open in Arlington in late April or early May, according to his application. The Heights already has two other pizza houses, Villa House of Pizza and Capri, plus Jimmy’s and Nicola nearby.

I would like to thank the voters of Arlington for returning me to the Board of Selectmen for another term. It was a great turnout and I was pleased with the results. The almost 50/50 vote on Question 1 was also a victory for our town. This was a very confusing question – many who voted for me also voted yes on the question. In conversation they told me that they would prefer four lanes but are still supporters of this project and its funding by federal and state funds. They also appreciate that we have compromised to a three-lane plan. It's time to put the arguments and personal attacks behind us and move forward on this project.
