Arlington Catholic Baseball's Home Playoff Game Postponed

The Cougars showdown with No. 18 Saugus has been moved to Tuesday.

The seventh-seeded Arlington Catholic baseball team’s home playoff game against No. 18 Saugus today in the quarterfinals of the Division 3 North bracket has been moved to tomorrow (Tuesday, June 5) due to the inclement weather. It’s still at 4 p.m. at Summer Street Field. Tuesday’s forecast also calls for a chance of showers throughout the day, according to the National Weather Service. The Cougars (14-7), fresh off their 6-2 win over No. 10 Weston, are facing 8-13 Saugus because Saugus upset No. 2 Shawsheen (15-4) 11-0 in the bracket’s first round. Prior to beating Shawsheen and Brighton in its last two games, Saugus, of the Northeastern Conference, had lost seven in a row after 6-6 start.

Russell's Blast Launches Arlington Past Visiting Lexington

Left fielder Dan Russell's fourth-inning bomb down Pond Terrace gave the Spy Ponders a 2-1 lead and a much-needed spark.

With his team down 1-0 going into the bottom half of the fourth inning Wednesday against visiting Lexington, Arlington High’s Jonathan Matos asked his teammates, who had yet to get a hit, for a little help while he was walking off the mound. “Come on! Let’s go!” he shouted coming back to the bench. Left fielder Dan Russell must have heard him, as four batters later, with the bases loaded and one out, Russell absolutely crushed a ball over Lexington’s left fielder. Russell easily could have circled the bases, but the ball rolled down Pond Terrace, which is a ground-rule double at Spy Pond Field. Regardless, he gave his Spy Ponders a 2-1 lead, which they would not relinquish on way to a 5-3 win. With right fielder Matt Garcia up next, …

Pond Rats Tie Belmont 3-3

The Pond Rats, one of Arlington's Senior Babe Ruth teams, appeared to be in control of Thursday's game before letting a 3-0 lead slip in the final innings.

The Arlington Pond Rats appeared to have Thursday’s game against Belmont well in hand. The Pond Rats took a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning, and pitcher Sam Donnelly had been dominant, only allowing one hit and striking out seven through five. But two infield singles and two walks later, the Pond Rats’ lead had been cut to two, at 3-1, and Donnelly was pulled with no outs and the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning. Belmont would score one more in the inning, off reliever JP Calcaterra, before tying the game with a bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh. And with the Summer Street Field lights needing to be turned off, the game would end after seven in a 3-3 tie. In all, Belmont scored three runs off only four hits, including a…

Metro Baseball Team Drops to 1-2 in Bay State Games

Metro allowed 20 runs total in losses to Northeast and Southeast on Wednesday.

In day two of the Bay State Games, Metro kept up its gaudy offensive pace from game one, notching five runs against Northeast and eight runs later in the day against Southeast. Problem is, Metro—which includes Arlington's David Fitzgerald and Robert Wesoloski—gave up a whole lot more runs than they scored, losing to Northeast 8-5 and Southeast 12-8 to fall to 1-2 in the tournament and put an appearance in the Gold Medal Game in serious doubt. On Wednesday's final game, Roslindale's Gavin Pittore gave up eight runs—six of them earned—to Southeast in three innings of work. Southeast opened up a 11-0 lead by the fifth inning and never looked back, though Metro mounted a six-run rally in the bottom of the sixth and final frame to close the gap…
