UPDATED: Mass. Ave. May Be Closed Until Monday Morning

Downed poles caused a transformer to crash to the ground at Massachusetts Avenue and Grove Street. Traffic is being diverted off Mass. Ave. while crews work on the poles.

UPDATED, 7:25 p.m., Traffic on Massachusetts Avenue may be detoured off the main street through tonight and possibly into early Monday morning, according to the town of Arlington.  The downed poles caused isolated power outages in the area. I arrived at the intersection of Mass. Avenue and Grove Street just after the pole fell into the middle of the street. I stopped my car and called the Arlington Police to let them know about the pole and so did some other people who also helped wave people away from the intersection until the Police arrived. UPDATED: Tanker Truck Overturns, Dumping Gallons of Fuel into Area, Mystic River

Eyewitness describes fuel flowing "like water from a hydrant" into the river.

UPDATED, 10:17 p.m.: Roads impacted by the rollover and fuel spill will be closed for the rest of the evening and into Saturday morning as the clean-up continues, according to a press release from the town. "At this time, it is expected that roads from the intersections of River St. and Mystic Valley Parkway, Hamlet St. and Medford St., Summer St. and Mystic Valley Parkway, and Route 60 and the High St. Bridge will be closed to traffic throughout the night in an effort to reopen tomorrow morning." Town Seeks Amateur Radio Users for Emergencies

Fire chief seeking volunteers to help with emergency response in case town's communications systems go down.

Arlington officials are seeking amateur radio operators willing to help the town with emergency response. In a statement, officials said they're looking for licensed ham radio operators to become volunteers and help out in case the town's communications systems stop working during an emergency. Fire Chief Robert Jefferson told the Boston Globe it would take an "extreme scenario" for the town to resort to using amateur radio. “You never know,” Jefferson told the Globe. Arlington used a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to buy a ham radio for emergencies, the paper reported. Police Log: False Fire Alarm, Motorcycle Accident, House Vandalized

The following incidents were documented in the Arlington Police logs for Saturday, Feb. 18. Motorcyclist Fails to Stop for Pedestrian At 6:23 p.m. police responded to 23 Massachusetts Ave., where a pedestrian was hit in crosswalk by a motorcycle. A witness said she stopped for the pedestrian when a motorcycle cut through between two cars. The woman said the motorcycle did not stop in time and “must have hit her,” according to the report. The motorcyclist said he tried to stop but spun out due to his speed. He fell to the ground and his helmet struck the lower leg and foot of the pedestrian. The pedestrian, who appeared neither injured nor visibly shaken, refused medical treatment, according to the report. The motorcyclist was cited for …

Fraud Attempt Almost Costs Resident $4,000 Friday, Feb. 3 at 10:38 a.m. - An Alpine Street resident told Arlington Policesomeone tried to use her credit card to charge $4,000 the travel website Orbitz. The charge did not go through, police said. Firefighters Called to Arlington Reservoir Saturday, Feb. 4 at 12:51 a.m. - Firefighters were called to the Arlington Reservoir for a report of an outside fire. According to the incident report, officials could see fire and smoke coming from deep within bushes in the area. Officials noted there were no obvious signs of arson. The following is a look at some of the calls handled by the Arlington Police Department on Monday, Jan. 23.  Fire Ladder Damaged 10:55 a.m. - The Arlington Fire Dept. reported that two tires on a ladder truck were damaged. Officials said they don’t know what object caused the damage, but the incident was recorded by police as malicious destruction of property. The vehicle ”looked funny” driving up Mystic Avenue after firefighters returned from a training exercise, firefighters said according to the police report. The damage is estimated to be $800. Toddler Released from Hospital after Falling Through Ice at Spy Pond

Police report family of three is back home and recovering from Sunday incident.

A 3-year-old boy rescued after falling through thin ice into Spy Pond Sunday afternoon, has been released from the hospital, a police captain said Monday. Arlington Police and Fire departments rescued the 3-year-old and his parents on Sunday after they set out onto thin ice and fell through about 10 feet from shore. The three Arlington residents were reportedly in stable condition as of Sunday evening, according to Police Chief Fred Ryan.  Police Capt. Richard Flynn said the parents were released from the hospital on Sunday. The 3-year-old was kept overnight for observation for hypothermia and released Monday morning. UPDATE: Spy Pond Victims in Stable Condition

Two adults and a 3-year-old fall through thin ice, snow around 5 p.m. behind Spy Pond Condominiums.

A 3-year-old and two adults who were rescued by the Arlington Fire Department after falling through thin ice on Spy Pond near Linwood Street Sunday afternoon are reported in stable condition in three Boston hospitals. "We're thankful that we were able to reach the victims quickly and our firefighters and police officers did an extraordinary job rescuing each of them," said Arlington Police Chief Fred Ryan. The three victims apparently set out onto the thin ice and snow covering the water while going for a walk around 5:30 p.m. when the ice broke about 10 yards from shore, said a police source.
