Voter Turnout Low in Arlington for Super Tuesday

The turnout was considerably lower during this year's Presidential Primary, officials said.

The Massachusetts Presidential Primary was Tuesday, but voters were scarce at the polls throughout the day. Town officials at various poll locations said that turnout was considerably lower than the 2008 Primary, when the top names on the ballot were Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. An official at the District 10 location, Arlington Town Hall, explained that by 5 p.m. during the 2008 Primary, 350 residents had cast votes. On Tuesday this year, by 5 p.m. the location hadn’t even cracked the 200 mark. “This is much less of a turnout than the last one because it had a lot more people on the ballot with Barack and all,” Town Clerk Stephanie Lucarelli said at about 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Residents, Town Office Hopefuls Pack Town Hall for Candidates Night

The League of Women Voters and Vision 2020 sponsored Candidates Night, where town office candidates presented their platforms and perspectives on the issues.

Town Hall was filled to the brim Thursday night as hundreds of residents attended Candidates Night to learn more about the candidates’ backgrounds and their perspectives on the issues. Attendees started trickling into Town Hall an hour before the event to secure seats. Cars with candidate billboards lined Mass Ave.; supporters with signs and dogs sporting campaign T-shirts greeted residents and candidates as they arrived for the event.  Candidates lined the stage to give their introductions and answer the questions audience members submitted on index cards before the event began.
