Gemma’s Owners Opening ‘Casual American Style Restaurant’

Gemma’s name change was approved at Monday’s Board of Selectmen’s meeting.

The owners of the recently closed Gemma Ristorante are behind Cooper’s Tavern, according to paperwork filed with the Board of Selectmen’s office. Ilir and Melaiza Velagoshti wrote to the board that they’re planning to operate a “casual American style restaurant” at the former Gemma site, 319 Broadway in Arlington Center, as they feel “it is more appropriate and needed in [the] business district.” ----- Do you agree with the owners? Is a casual American style restaurant what Arlington Center needs? Let us know by posting a comment below. ----- Their proposed name change was unanimously approved by the board Monday. Cooper’s Tavern was the second new historically named tavern to come before the board in less than a month. In late August, the…

I worked at Gemma for a long time and I would agree with some things but disagree with others. For one, the owners are not bad people. They immigrated to the United States and worked their tails off so that they can open their own business and were successful in doing so. Gemma built a good name for its self when it was a small pizza/pasta shop mainly due to the kindness of the owners and the …   more ›

Gemma Site Could Become ‘Cooper’s Tavern’

The requested change follows on the heels of a new historically named tavern set for East Arlington.

The recently closed Gemma Ristorante in Arlington Center might become “Cooper’s Tavern.” The change will be requested Monday night at the Board of Selectmen’s meeting, according to the meeting’s agenda. Cooper’s Tavern will be the second new historically named tavern to come before the board in less than a month. In late August, the board unanimously approved plans for Menotomy Grill and Tavern, which is slated for the old Hollywood Video site in East Arlington. ----- Would you be excited about a new tavern in Arlington Center? Let us know by posting a comment below. ----- If approved, Cooper’s Tavern will be just steps away from the original Cooper’s Tavern, where, on April 19, 1775, “the old men of Menotomy” planned an ambush on a …

What Should Go In at the Old Nana's Mart Space in Arlington Center?

In our "Visions for Vacancies" series, we ask you what you'd like to see in vacant buildings or lots around Arlington.

Each month Arlington Patch presents a new vacant building or lot and asks you to tell us what you think would be the best use for it. Forget what zone it's in, setback regulations and all the other zoning jargon that puts most people to sleep. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community? This month's vacancy is the old Nana's Mart space in Arlington Center, at 456A Massachusetts Ave. What do you think should go in this storefront? Let us know by posting a comment below.

I second the crepe cafe idea. Authentic French crepes both savory and sweet with fresh ingredients, and with fresh sides like mixed green salads. Also good coffee drinks to accompany it.   more ›

Police Seeking Suspect in CVS Armed Robbery

Though grainy, police have released the first photo of a suspect who robbed CVS in Arlington Center at knifepoint.

It's a grainy image, but Arlington Police have released the first identifying photo of a suspect who robbed CVS in Arlington Center using a 6-inch knife. In an email, Police Chief Fred Ryan said the Arlington Police Department is working to enhance the picture. The suspect is described as white male with a shaved head, 35 to 45 years old, about 6 feet, wearing a gray sweat shirt and jeans.  About 8:40 p.m. on Saturday, a CVS employee told police that a man followed her behind the register, showed her a knife and demanded she open the register. The employee said the man took $190 and left the store at 319 Broadway, according to the police report. Another employee said she was outside CVS when she saw a man exit the store in a hurry, walking…

Police Log: Arlington Center CVS Robbed at Knifepoint

The following information comes from the Arlington Police Department. It does not indicate a convicition.

Arlington Police are seeking a suspect who robbed CVS in Arlington Center using a 6-inch knife. About 8:40 p.m. on Saturday, a CVS employee told police that a man followed her behind the register, showed her a knife and demanded she open the register. The employee said the man took $190 and left the store at 319 Broadway, according to the police report. Another employee said she was outside the store when she saw a man exit the store in a hurry, walking quickly across Massachusetts Avenue. That employee told police she did not realize a robbery had just happened, so she didn’t pay attention to the man. Neither employee recognized the suspect. Police were able to review the store’s video surveillance system. Based on the images, the suspect…

Business Owner: Communication is Key to Staying Afloat in Tough Economy

Carol and Robin Pollack, owners of Coyote Impressions, celebrate 17 years open for business in Arlington Center.

For Carol Pollack, there is a simple explanation for how she managed to keep her business in Arlington Center open for 17 years: communication. “The key thing is to listen to your customers and watch what their buying patterns are,” said Carol Pollack, who runs Coyote Impressions with her partner Robin. “People tell us what they like, what they don’t like and what they want to see.” Coyote Impressions, 721 Massachusetts Ave., is a broad-range gift store selling jewelry, accessories and more for all ages. This Thanksgiving weekend, Carol and Robin celebrated the store’s 17th anniversary. “This weekend is about a thank you for everyone for supporting us throughout our trials and tribulations,” Carol Pollack said. In 2010, the store went …
