Take a look inside Arlington's newest local business.
Mystic Wine Shoppe opened Wednesday afternoon at 901 Mass. Ave., the storefront to the right of Stop & Shop. The shop’s owner, Eric Faiola, said Thursday afternoon that the first 24 hours had been busy. He said he’s planning a “grand opening” event in the coming weeks. Faiola also owns and operates Arlington Lithograph with his brother Jake. The brother’s grandfather and his two brothers opened the local printing company 50 years ago, before passing it down. New national study indicates that drug and alcohol use during the school day is a bigger problem than previously thought.
According to a new study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, roughly 17 percent of American high school students engage in smoking, drinking or doing drugs during the school day. The study also said that approximately 86 percent of students indicated that they knew of classmates who abuse drugs or alcohol during the school day. This was the 17th such study conducted by the NCASA. The group interviewed more than 1,000 students ages 12-17, according to an article appearing on Huffington Post. Perhaps more disturbing aspects to the survey included roughly 50 percent of the students indicating there was a place on their campus where students regularly went to do drugs or drink alcohol. There is no question that Arlington has become more “alcohol-friendly” in recent years. Just this spring, residents voted to add two more liquor-store licenses in town and gave Selectmen the ability to grant beer-and-wine licenses to the town’s theaters for the first time (“Selectmen Grant Two New Liquor-Store Licenses,” “Capitol Theatre to Serve Beer and Wine”). But one question does remain: Is Arlington ready for bars? Now, yes, some restaurants in Arlington do have “bars,” Tryst, Not Your Average Joe’s, Punjab and Tango, for example. Should happy hour come back to Massachusetts?
Is happy hour coming back to the Bay State? The 28-year-old “happy hour law” now banning Massachusetts bars and restaurants from pouring free, discounted or two-for-one alcoholic beverages in area restaurants may be updated so restaurants can compete with casinos that may one day be in the state. As part of the ban, cities and towns now rule that a beverage must be priced the same for each calendar week and two drinks can only be served per person at a restaurant. In addition, pitchers of alcohol can only be served to two or more people, according to the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission. The ABCC will hold a hearing in Boston on Aug. 21. The restaurants failed to pass an undercover test by police in late May.
Four Arlington restaurants were caught serving alcohol to minors during an undercover operation by police in late May. Kathmandu Spice, Sabzi, Sweet Chili and Manna Sushi all served beer to the minors who were working with police on Wednesday, May 30, without asking for ID, according to the police report. It was all four restaurants first offense. The owners of Kathmandu Spice, Sabzi and Sweet Chili appeared before the Board of Selectmen on Monday, and they all took full responsibility for their infractions. All three restaurants had their alcohol licenses suspended for three days by the board. The restaurants will serve their suspensions during the middle of the week, sometime in September. The theater received approval Monday from the Board of Selectmen.
Despite strong, and vocal, objections from a few neighboring residents, on Monday, the Board of Selectmen granted the Capitol Theatre the right to serve beer and wine. “Thank you for your patience and your excellent business,” board chairman Kevin Greeley told the movie theater’s owner, Richard Fraiman, “and I hope this helps your business.” The board approved Fraiman’s application, which was made possible by a town-wide vote in April, in a 4-1 vote. Five things you need to know about Arlington's newly-approved wine shop.
1.) HOW WE GOT HERE: In April, Arlington voters approved two new liquor-store licenses via a ballot question, 3,958-2,648. Then, on Monday, June 18, the Board of Selectmen picked the two winning applicants from the field of six. It took an unselfish move, which even surprised the person who made it, for the board to reach a decision on the second license.
After more than three hours of presentations and deliberations Monday night, the Board of Selectmen handed out the town’s two new liquor-store licenses – but not before an unexpected twist. The board first granted The Meat House one of the two licenses in a unanimous vote but was then left with quite the predicament. In the first round of voting, Selectmen Kevin Greeley and Steven Byrne had selected the Foodmaster Super Markets proposal as their top pick, while Daniel Dunn and Joseph Curro Jr. had chosen the Mystic Wine Shoppe proposal, and as for Diane Mahon, well, she was undecided. Residents overwhelmingly favored the Mystic Wine Shoppe proposal in our poll, but who will the Board of Selectmen pick?
The six applicants in the running for Arlington's two new liquor-store licenses are scheduled to present their respective cases to the Board of Selectmen tonight, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Each applicant is expected to go before the board for about a half-hour (10 minutes for their presentation, and then 20 for interested parties to speak and ask questions). The board plans to select the two winning applicants tonight. In our poll and in the comments, residents clearly favored Mystic Wine Shoppe as the top proposal.
