Town Meeting Ends

A recap of Arlington Town Meeting's eighth, and now final, session.

Arlington’s 2012 Town Meeting came to a close Wednesday night, as members got through the remaining 24 articles during the meeting’s eighth, and now final, session. Most of the articles were either routine appropriations (which all passed) or recommended votes of no action by the Board of Selectmen (which were all upheld). Of the appropriation articles, Article 52 got the most attention but, like the rest, passed easily. The article asked members to put $20,000 toward signage for Arlington’s four historic sites – The Cyrus E. Dallin Art Museum, the Jason Russell House, the Old Schwamb Mill and the Uncle Sam Memorial Statue – through the Arlington Committee on Tourism and Economic Development (A-TED). On Wednesday, these 15 articles …

Laura Chesson got the approval of the School Committee Thursday. She'll start July 1.

Laura Chesson, the principal of Maynard High School, was named as Arlington’s new assistant superintendent Thursday night. Chesson was selected from a field of five finalists by Superintendent Kathleen Bodie and then confirmed by the School Committee Thursday in a unanimous vote. “I think you’re going to be a great fit in Arlington, and I’m excited you’re here,” School Committee member Jeff Thielman told her at Thursday’s meeting. The position is currently being filled by Wallis Raemer on an interim basis, and it’s been about four years since the district had a full-time assistant superintendent in place, Thielman said. Chesson, who starts July 1, thanked Bodie and the School Committee for the opportunity. “Words cannot express how excited…

Leaf-Blower Debate Now Underway at Town Meeting

A recap of Town Meeting's sixth session on Wednesday.

Town Meeting members began to discuss a proposed ban on gas-powered leaf blowers Wednesday. They also passed Minuteman High School’s budget and a town bylaw amendment that requires residents to bring in their uncollected trash by 9 p.m. the next day. In addition, members decided not to reconsider an earlier vote of no action on Article 32, which would have been a report and recommendation from the town manager on the implementation of a consolidated town-school finance department. Leaf-Blower Debate Town Meeting member Carol Band submitted a substitute motion for Article 25 after the Board of Selectmen’s recommended vote of no action on her original article. Band’s motion would amend the town bylaws to prohibit the use of gas-powered leaf …

11:37 am on Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Why don’t we just ban everything.....how stupid. I have lived here my whole life and I am proud to call Arlington my home, but now I am really frustrated and honestly disgusted. When the town can’t sweep the street and debris is everywhere on my road I push the debris into piles and then sweep it up and put it into my own leaf bags. Guess I won’t be helping out like I use to and doing my part as …   more ›

Assistant Superintendent Appointment on Tonight's School Committee Agenda

Two of the district's five finalists have already announced that they're out of the running.

The appointment of a new assistant superintendent is on tonight’s Arlington School Committee agenda. Last month, the district announced that it had five finalists for the position. However, two of those finalists are now out of the running. Belmont High School Principal Michael Harvey was picked as Hamilton-Wenham’s superintendent earlier this week, according to Belmont Patch, and Sheryl Boris-Schacter, principal of Hunnewell Elementary School in Wellesley, recently told the Swellesley Report that she didn’t get an offer from Arlington. That leaves Kerry Dunne, the district’s K-12 director of history and social sciences, Laura Chesson, the principal of Maynard High School, and Alexander Wyeth, an assistant superintendent in Norwood, as the…
