Arlington resident Stephen Harrington writes that there is "something seriously amiss with the political leadership in Arlington."
The following is a Letter to the Editor from Arlington resident Stephen Harrington. Last fall, children on the Arlington High School football team suffered 15 suspected concussions. Most were confirmed by their pediatrician and, at almost 25 percent of all football players, it was arguably the highest rate of concussions in the state. More than one-third of the football helmets used were more than 10 years old, which does not meet the minimum standard of safety for football helmets, and two-thirds of the helmets were more than five years old, exceeding the manufacturer's warranty. Multiple requests for information from the school department including the high school principal, athletic director and superintendent were met with silence. …

Looking to make a crowd pleasing dessert for your next gathering? Look no further. This easy to make trifle is sure to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth.
"It would be spiteful to put a Jellyfish in a trifle." ~Karl Pilkington I love my trifle bowl but don't often get to use it, so I typically offer to make a dessert when invited to a party. So when Mother's Day rolled around last weekend I knew I would have to make a trifle. The trifle I make is some combination of cake, chocolate, crushed candy bar and whipped cream but I wanted to try something a little different. I stumbled upon a recipe that used the standard cake and candy but to add a new note of flavor instant coffee was added to the mix. The grocery store had hazelnut instant coffee on sale so I chose that instead of regular, substitued vanilla pudding for chocolate and in lieu of yellow cake I bought pound cake. I'm sure my trifle …

Lainey enjoys the waterfront.
My daughter Lainey is 5 years old, and I love her. Since the new baby, the family was due for a nice restaurant, so we ventured into Boston and dined at Legal Harborside. “There’s a spot!” Lainey yelled as I drove down Seaport Boulevard. “Nope,” she groaned. “Hydrant.” We parked in a lot, which was cheap for Boston, and crossed the street to Legal for lunch. The windows and floors of the restaurant sparkled, a fountain pond teemed with fish, the bar towered with wine and an elevator serviced three entire floors. Obviously, this was the flagship of the Legal Sea Food franchise. We were seated at a scenic ground-floor table beside a wall of windows, and soon the action in the harbor caught Lainey’s eye. “A boat! A boat! Look!” she pointed. …

Some animal enthusiasts go to amazing lengths to care for their furry family and friends.
I was feeling a tiny bit self-conscious this week as I went about preparing to leave my pets behind while I go away on my first overseas holiday in nearly four years. My personal preparations for this trip to Sri Lanka will be miniscule in comparison to the things I feel compelled to do in order to make my absence as stress-free and enjoyable for my dogs and cat as humanly possible. Just as I began to feel like I was a little too nuts with regards to my pets, stories of humans going to even more extreme lengths for the animals they love came to my attention to put my mind at ease. Custody Battle for Knuckles the Puggle Indeed, puggles (pug/beagle crosses) are endearing, but according to the New York Post, one Manhattan man has gone ape in…

This lovely chicken salad makes a great topping for crackers or in a sandwich. It fits in perfectly with a Mother's Day brunch.
"Love, like a chicken salad a restaurant has, must be taken with blind faith or it loses its flavor." ~Helen Rowland It's Mother's Day and like most of us I'm sure your plans revolve around visiting with the women in your life. And eating. Don't most of our plans revolve around food? I am having my family over tomorrow for an afternoon of laughs, food and celebrating the moms in the family (we have big family so there are quite a few). Since the weather is going to be so beautiful we'll be outdoors, grilling. The usual suspects will be in attendance; hot dogs, hamburgers, various salads, chips and dips. I am also making a great curried chicken salad to serve with crackers. This chicken salad is light and tasty, with just a bit of punch …

Lainey takes after her scientist mother.
My daughter Lainey is 5 years old, and I love her. If there is anything that involves slime or sugar—she’s on it. When the grandparents were in town, Lainey convinced them to visit Henry Bear’s Park and buy her a toy. She led them straight to the expensive stuff and picked out a science kit. “Mad science!” Lainey exclaimed in her spooky Dr. Frankenstein voice. Soon Lainey split cornstarch across the dining room table, mixed it with a packet from the kit, and made glow in the dark slime. She dragged family members one-by-one into her closet to show how brightly the goop glowed. Later, Lainey dove into her kit again, this time discovering how to make rock candy. “We have to read the constructions!” she directed. (That's no typo.) The recipe …
Garden containers are easy and make a great gift!
It is still a bit too early to plant many vegetable crops, but this weekend is a good time to start your own decorative or edible container garden. Plus, this project can easily be arranged in a day and for last minute Mother's Day shoppers, a plant container would be a gift any mother or grandmother could enjoy all summer long. Start with the Container Containers come in all shapes and sizes. You’ll find rustic wood whiskey barrels, glazed pots, terra cotta, even fiberglass and metal. The best way to choose your container is to find one that will fit the personality of your home and apartment and fit the space where you’d like it to rest. Preparing the Container Once you have selected your container, it’s time to choose the medium for …

Chinese medicine is working wonders for me and my dog—so far.
I’ve managed life with chronic pain for years. Over the past month, however, I suffered a flare up so severe that one of my dog training students expressed concern, and she shared her own experience with acupuncture—not only to relieve pain, but also to aid in healing certain musculoskeletal conditions. I had heard about acupuncture here and there, and my own doctor had recommended it on occasion, but I (apparently mistakenly) had the notion that it was only about pain relief, and the cost of acupuncture treatments (being so very much more expensive than pain management drugs) seemed out of reach. However, something my student told me about the way her acupuncturist, Rong Zhang (at Harvard Vanguard in Cambridge), had explained it to her …

The Friends of Robbins Farm Park is hosting a 'thank you' celebration for the community at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The following is a Letter to the Editor from Christian Klein of Friends of Robbins Farm Park, Community Events. Last year, we were able to replace our beloved hill slides through the generous support of our members, our community and our town. This project involved a unique partnership between the Friends of Robbins Farm Park and the Arlington Recreation Department, where we each agreed to raise half of the funds required to replace the slides. Not only did we reach out goal, through your efforts, we exceeded it. (The additional funds have been placed in an isolated account dedicated to the future maintenance of the slides.) This is deserving of a celebration! We are hosting a party in honor of our new slides on Saturday, May 12, at 4 p.m…

Chicken Marsala is a delicious, easy to make at home dish. A little chicken, a few mushrooms, some wine...piece of cake.
"One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating." ~Luciano Pavarotti One of my favorite Italian dishes is Chicken Marsala. For some reason though, nine out of ten times I end up ordering something else when I go out. The same scene plays out every time; I whittle my choices down to the Marsala and one other dish and that other dish always wins out. Because of this, I tend to make Chicken Marsala quite a bit at home. Don't let the fancy pants name deter you from trying your hand at it...the dish is quick enough to whip up on a weeknight, yet elegant enough to serve at a dinner party. It is also easy to change up. Add some cream to the sauce or throw …
