After another baby dies after being left in a hot car, a mother recounts a mistake that might have cost her daughter's life.
RDJ July 12, 2014 at 12:56 am
I am a parent of 4 children ranging in age from 2 to 13. I have 3 living children and one angel babyRead More that passed at 3 months. Having lost a child I know the pain that comes with that loss. Susan...I have sympathy for these children but not for the parents. I have never forgotten my children whether I have 3 of them with me or just one of them with me. The reason so many parents are upset about this is because you don't forget something that is the most important thing in your life. I can't tell you how many times my kids have fallen asleep in the car....not once have I ever forgotten that they were there. I agree that several people have children that do not deserve them. It makes me angry that people like you can sympathize with parents who make what you call is a mistake... A mistake is putting red laundry in with white laundry. Leaving your child in a car is not a mistake...it is simply put negligence and child abuse. Making excuses for why people make these so called mistakes is sickening. Do you "forget" to change your baby because they are asleep? Do you "forget" to feed your child because they are in their room playing when you are fixing supper? And your argument about kids "mistakingly" drowning in a bath tub is even more troubling. What responsible adult would ever leave a child in the bathtub by themselves? The answer is not one. These children do not ask to be born. It is the responsibility of the parent to make sure of their children's safety. We live in a time when people are too absorbed by what celebrity is doing this or that or what so and so posted on Facebook or twitter. People are getting lazy because everything is automatic. We have cars with back up cameras so you don't run over a child that isn't being watched....cars that can park themselves because people don't want to learn to parallel park ( because it's too hard(sarcasm))...cars that tell you you forgot your keys dumbass...headlights that go on and off on their own because people can't remember to turn them on in the rain or dark and turn them off when they park. We have become used to having to be reminded of what our responsibilities are by everyone else. People have hectic lives because they make it that way. It still isn't an excuse to forget the only thing in your life that depends completely on you for it's survival.

Could not agree more!
RDJ July 12, 2014 at 02:23 am
Just another thought....what does the profession of a person have to do with their ability to beRead More responsible? Susan says it happens all the time to responsible parents that are by some article listed as police officers, doctors and social workers. Last time I checked there are irresponsible people in all kinds of professions. Prime example...Our president. Where you work has no weight on how well you parent or how responsible you are as a parent. In my opinion you are reaching for anything to make your point seem valid. I do not agree that we should make someone else responsible for reminding us that we have a child in the car. The car manufacturer didn't have the child but they are supposed to make you remember that you did? How is that logical? They provide you with the tools to safely transport your child just like the car seat manufacturer makes a seat that is safe for your child to be put in the car. They can't provide common sense. It is the parents job to make sure the car seat is correctly installed and the child is in the seat strapped in correctly. They don't have to remind you to put the child in the seat so why do they need to remind you to get them out? What next? A toilet seat that reminds you to wipe your butt? I am glad that this little girl didn't lose her life by her mom's negligence but the fact that the mother is using her abuse as a way to make money is sickening. If you are serious about making a difference then look into parenting classes or educating children on doing more things for themselves instead of relying on technology for everything and maybe they will grow up to be responsible parents that don't need a reminder to get their kid out of the car. Sometimes I think that as we progress in the technology field the farther behind it puts human intelligence and common sense. Obviously technology has taken the place of the things that used to teach people the value of hard work and responsibility. I wish things were back to being simplified....There would be a lot less suffering all around.

For the sake of the argument, let's put aside all the health risks of second hand smoke. I am aRead More non-smoking adult who will tolerate a smoker's weakness if I must. I just can't understand why a smoker would subject an innocent child or beloved pet to such discomfort. And why would anyone defend a smoker's "right" to do so?
cardiclash July 10, 2014 at 04:35 pm
If you have to have that cancer stick just take it outside so pets and children can breathe withoutRead More gagging or wanting to vomit. Plain and simple

I'm a non smoker but what really bugs me is today's view on smokers. If I wanted to smoke a legalRead More product in my own home then I have every right to do so. And gee thanks for the memo, pets breathe the same air we do. I never would have figured that out on my own.

Few things. Of course felons cannot obtain guns, so that leaves MOSTLY law abiding citizens doingRead More the killing. Legal purchases involve straw purchases. Suicides are real deaths last time I checked; many would not use a knife because it's too messy. Background checks have prevented about 2 million people from obtaining a gun. No one in their right mind should oppose universal background checks, but the NRA does( worthy of note is that majority, about 80%, I believe) of NRA members disagree with the NRA board who represent the gun manufacturers), and most Congressional Republicans also oppose. No surprise there. Even GOAL here has no problem with the revised state bill as written, not that I care what GOAL thinks anyway. Now if the federal govt can just limit semi-automatics, close the gun show loophole, limit # of purchase per wingnut, we would be moving in the right direction; reinstate the semi-automatic ban enacted in the 90s, and tighten it up, ban internet purchases, limit ammo purchases, and close the gun show loophole in many other states. No one needs a semi to mow down the herd or for home protection. This MA gun legislation is one more victory for gun control advocates like me.
Rob C July 11, 2014 at 11:46 pm
LOL Tyler, do you ever think about what you type out in a post? "Of course felons cannot obtainRead More guns, so that leaves MOSTLY law abiding citizens doing the killing." I am sure you are 100% correct, the felon gets out of jail and goes to get a gun to commit more felonies but thinks to himself, it is illegal for me to have that now, I will go get me an ice cream instead. Also out of curiosity, what part of killing somebody makes a person a law abiding citizen? Problem that you and the rest of the gun grabbers fail to realize is that criminals don't follow the law, hence the name they get called. Of course suicides are real deaths but if they are committed to killing themselves they will use a knife, jump off a building, step in front of a bus or drive a car into something. No law is going to save them.

I own a .22 semi-auto with a 10-round clip. Do you propose, Tyler, that my semi be illegal? IRead More don't think so. By the way, women rarely kill themselves or anyone else with guns. We prefer to OD; less messy. No self-respecting legal gun owner would even consider selling a firearm illegally or doing straw purchases. We don't want to jeopardize our own licenses but the real reason is we don't want gang-bangers, thugs, robbers, thieves and other assorted hoodlums owning guns. The dishonest felons buy guns from other dishonest felons, hoodlums and other undesirable riffraff. Tyler, you are just repeating liberal talking points (& getting them seriously wrong) and other anti-gun groups uninformed "noise" masquerading as supposed truths. You'd do well to stop listening to the self-righteous pompous far-left zealots on MSNBC, stop reading Huffington Post owned by a self-proclaimed Socialist and do your own unbiased research. After doing your own research you might still not like guns but at least you'd get your facts straight and be able to have an informed intelligent discussion based on facts, not fairy tales, emotions & uber left-wing anti-gun propaganda, which has been debunked by stats for years.

I think it's great! I know that particular area well and have used the cross walk to cross over.Read More VERY FEW CARS ever stop. In Arlington where I live there have been a rash of people crossing Mass Ave in cross walks who have been hit and seriously injured. they have about 16 eavesdropping cameras throughout the city(and all connected to room in D.C. whereRead More all America is being watched), the police could use them. My elderly mother was hit by a car while in a crosswalk in a nearby quiet town. She was badly hurt,Read More had a knee operation to put her knee back together and spent 4 months in a rehab. She will never walk without assistance again which has aged her considerably. As a pedestrian I can stand at a crosswalk for several minutes before anyone will stop. The cars just fly by and ignore you, and when I'm crossing I try to make eye contact with each driver before walking out because I've had so many close calls where someone isn't paying attention and nearly hits me mid-cross. I often wonder why police don't take crosswalks more seriously and pull people over who don't stop. It's about time they did something!
