The Foodmaster Braves took Game 1 of the Intermediate League Town Championship 5-2 on a combined three-hitter by Garth McSweeney and Conor Farrell.
The game featured excellent pitching on both sides as both teams had to scratch for runs. The Harris Plumbing and Heating Rockies took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Jim Doherty singled, advanced to second when Marcus Messuri reached on an error, stole third, and then was awarded home on a balk. McSweeney settled down after the balk to strike out the next two batters. The Braves scored two to take the lead in the home half of the fourth against Rockies ace Henry Feinstein. Jon Alves reached on a walk, then went to third on a base hit to right by Adam Deakin. Alves scored on a wild pitch, and Deakin came in later on a ground ball by Nicolas Fantasia. In the top of the sixth, Griffin Lessell reached on an error to short and the dead ball pushed him to second base. He later scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 2-2. Jackson Foster doubled later in the inning, but was thrown out trying to steal third, the second runner thrown out by Braves catcher Stephen Vaccarello.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Braves got the bats going against Marcus Messuri. A single by Alves, a walk to Deakin, and a single by Fantasia loaded the bases. A base hit by Antony Kellermann drove in the go-ahead run, but the Braves tacked on two more with hits from McSweeney (2-4) and Farrell (3-4). The Rockies got a one-out base hit from Ryan Ahern, but the Braves buckled down and got the final two outs to secure the victory.
Feinstein had seven strikeouts over five innings and walked only three. McSweeney pitched the first three for the Braves, striking out four and allowing only three baserunners. Farrell got the win with four innings of relief, with five strikeouts and just four baserunners.
Game 2 of this best of 3 series resumes at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at Peirce Field.
