The Rogers and Hutchins Funeral Home White Sox played a great game Wednesday night, defeating the Sports Etc. Phillies 7-2 with timely hitting and strong defense behind a complete-game effort by John Rideout on the mound. The win improved the White Sox record to 6-3 for the season, putting them in a tie for second place.

Danny Lordan and John Smokovich led the White Sox with two hits apiece. Other hits came off the bats of Andrew Cunningham, Matt Laurendeau, Brian Canniff and Clark Ewen. The team played a strong defensive game with a tip of the cap to catcher Tyler Hanlon for blocking a lot of Rideout's dropping knuckleballs and curves. Smokovich made a great running catch early in the game that saved a run. Chip Daley ended the game with a diving catch on a fast dropping line drive to center.

For the Phillies, Steven Liakos and Joe Kelly pitched well in the losing cause. The Phillies were led offensively by Frankie Roche, who launched one over the fence at Peirce. Anthony Divito and Tom Kearney also played well for the Phils.

Intermediate League Action

Braves 13, Marlins 2

The Foodmaster Braves coasted to a 13-2 victory over the ABA Marlins on Wednesday night behind strong pitching by Garth McSweeney and a grand slam by Chris Warren.

The Braves scored two in the first, three in the second, and one in the third against the Marlins before breaking it open in the fourth, with Warren providing the punch with a shot that ended up at the base of the hill in right field at North Union. Spencer Hayes had two hits and two RBIs for the Marlins.  McSweeney had two hits and scored twice, Carl Conti reached base three times, and Nicolas Fantasia walked twice and scored both times.  McSweeney pitched three shut-out innings, allowing just one hit before being lifted in the fourth. Conti struck out the side in the fourth to secure the win.

The Marlins had just that one hit, by Branden Sheehan in the third, but were patient at the plate, drawing seven walks.  Sheehan and Jake Tamir-Pinsky reached base twice for the Marlins.  Alex Bergeron and Jack Vaudo scored the Marlins' runs.
