Arlington High Freshman Tearing Up the Slopes

There may not have been much snow in New England this winter, but alpine skier and freshman Paul Klosterman still found a way to carve up the slopes.

The local 14-year-old, who competes with the Wildcat Mountain Ski Team out of New Hampshire, recently finished his racing season with a top-20 and top-25 finish at the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Eastern J3 Junior Championships (formerly known as the Junior Olympics). The championships were held from March 15 to 19 at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine.

Klosterman placed just outside of qualifying for the U.S. National Development Training Camp and the Canada-America games. The championships featured the best 170 alpine skiers from the east, most of whom train at full-time ski academies, unlike Klosterman.

Klosterman qualified for the championships by being the ninth-ranked skier in New Hampshire. Earlier this season, he won four regional qualifying events, was third in the New Year’s Open Race at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire and eighth at the Eastern Regional Series Slalom Race at Whiteface in Lake Placid, N.Y.

A born skier, Klosterman placed third in a national race at age 6.
