Next Steps: Mass. Ave. Corridor Project

MassDOT recently announced that they put the contract out to bid for the Mass. Ave. Corridor Project. The Town of Arlington would like to inform residents and businesses of what to expect in the coming months prior to the project starting. Contractor bids are due at MassDOT on January 22, 2014 for the Massachusetts Avenue Corridor project. Once their contractor is selected, Town officials and staff will meet with the contractor and MassDOT to determine the contractor’s intended methods, starting point, and schedule. This meeting is anticipated for late winter 2014, depending on when MassDOT selects its contractor. A public meeting for East Arlington property owners, business owners, and residents will follow.

Streets to Remain Open at All Times, Access to Businesses Maintained

According to MassDOT’s specifications for bids: “Mass Ave and all side streets shall remain open to traffic at all times during the period of time required for the completion of the work. Reasonable access shall be provided by the Contractor for the convenience and safe passage of pedestrians and vehicles through the project and also to the abutting properties. The Contractor shall serve written notice to all abutters one week in advance of any sidewalk/driveway  reconstruction work, and during such time that construction is in progress, he shall provide safe access to the abutting properties.”

MassDOT Approximate Dates for Selection of the Contractor

Bid Opening: January 22, 2014; Award: February 25, 2014; Notice to Proceed: April 1, 2014. In the coming months, the Town of Arlington will work with MassDOT to develop a communication plan to further inform property and business owners of anticipated impacts of this project. The length of the project is estimated to begin late spring/early summer of 2014 and completed in the Fall of 2015.
