LETTER: Town Moderator Seeking Applicants for Electronic Voting Study Committee

Applications are due by Friday, Aug. 31.

The following is a Letter to the Editor from Arlington Town Moderator John D. Leone.

This past spring Town Meeting, by passing Article 22, established a committee to study electronic voting for Town Meeting. Electronic voting is being slowly adopted by Towns across the Commonwealth. To date, only a few have done so.

The Committee shall study and make recommendations to a future Town Meeting on whether the Town should adopt electronic voting, when the electronic devices shall be used, in what situations, and for what purposes. It will also study what devices are available, the costs and benefits of the devices and the security features available, as well as what procedures and Bylaws would need to be implemented and changed.

The Committee shall not be larger than seven members all to be appointed by the Moderator. It would be helpful if potential members either have experience with the use and/or programming of electronic polling systems and/or electronic security protocols. All members must be focused and reliable and approach the process with an open mind about pros and cons of electronic voting regardless of any initial leaning.

If you are a resident of the Town and are interested in becoming a member of the Electronic Voting Study Committee, then please send your resume, qualifications and reasons for wanting to serve on the committee to me at JDLModerator@gmail.com or 51 Irving St., Arlington, MA 02476. Letters of interest/resumes should be sent by Friday, Aug. 31, 2012.
