The Massachusetts Democratic State Committee met Saturday in Dorchester to elect a new slate of grassroots leaders to the Massachusetts Democratic Party’s governing body.

“I congratulate the state committee members elected on Saturday,” Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairman John Walsh said. “They are a mix of experienced veterans and emerging leaders from across the Commonwealth. Democratic State Committee members are the glue that holds our grassroots party together and their leadership will be essential to winning in November.”

Members of the Democratic State Committee are elected to four-year terms in three different ways. One man and one woman are elected for each state senate district by voters in the presidential primary election. An additional man and woman are elected from each state senate district by a caucus of local grassroots Democrats. Finally, additional at-large members are elected to represent diverse communities throughout the Commonwealth by members of the state committee.

On Saturday, members were elected to ensure that the racial and gender balance of the committee reflects the population of the Commonwealth. Members were also elected to represent the LGBT community, college students, youth, seniors, people with disabilities, veterans and organized labor.

“Time and again, Massachusetts voters have demonstrated that they like our ideas and our candidates better and that’s because we work hard to make sure that the Massachusetts Democratic Party reflects the Commonwealth,” Walsh said. “If we want to keep Massachusetts and the nation moving forward, we must start by building a party where everyone is welcome and everyone is represented.”
