Arlington Receives Competitive Water-Quality Grant from State

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick awarded the Town of Arlington a competitive $39,580 grant Tuesday to improve water quality in Alewife and Mill brooks.

In all, the governor gave out five water-quality grants totaling $209,171 through the state Department of Environmental Protection program.

Arlington’s grant will address the non-point source pollution problem in the Alewife and Mill Brook sub-watersheds, according to the state.

Through the grant, Arlington will partner with the Town of Belmont and the Mystic River Watershed Association to identify pollution sources and reduce pollutants.

Practices that may be considered to reduce pollutants include vegetated swales, bio-retention structures, permeable pavement, street trees and rainwater harvesting, according to the state.

  • Cape Cod Conservation District, West Falmouth Harbor, $47,934
  • Town of Westwood, Boston Harbor, $23,947
  • Metropolitan Area Planning Council, Ipswich River Watershed, $23,737
