Vehicle Driven Into Junior's Variety in Smash-and-Grab Burglary

The male suspect used the vehicle to gain access into the store and then stole several scratch tickets and cash, including $160 meant for the Jimmy Fund, according to police.

Back on Sunday, Oct. 7, a male crashed a vehicle into Junior’s Variety on Broadway to gain entry into the store and then stole several scratch tickets, about $500 from the store’s lottery cash register and another $160 from its Jimmy Fund container, according to police.

Police responded to the store, at 203 Broadway, at about 1:18 a.m. that morning for a report of a vehicle into the building. At the scene, the store’s owner told police that he had just heard a crash and then had come out to find the vehicle in his store’s front doors.

An officer then spotted a white male, wearing a white button-down shirt and jeans, walking near the area of Webster and Warren streets, police said. The officer said the male appeared to be injured or carrying something. When the officer approached the male, he began running down Webster Street, according to police. At this time, four more officers were dispatched to the scene to help search for the male.

Police set up a perimeter and requested a K-9 unit. The K-9 was able to lead police to some discarded money and several scratch tickets in backyards on Webster Street. Police were unable to locate the suspect, however.

The store’s surveillance cameras were not working at the time of the incident, according to the owner. He was able to cancel all of the missing scratch tickets.

The vehicle was registered out of Plymouth, Mass., but police said the vehicle’s owner is not believed to be a suspect.

The tow truck driver who was called to the scene told police that it appeared the male had tried to get back into the vehicle to drive it away but couldn’t, as the vehicle’s transmission was destroyed in the crash.
