Two Recent Pedestrian Accidents in Arlington
A man was struck attempting to cross Mass. Ave. in front of Stop & Shop at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, and an elementary-school student was hit walking to school at the intersection of Herbert and Egerton roads back on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
Both victims were taken to area hospitals after their respective incidents with non-life-threatening injuries.
On Saturday, police responded to the intersection of Mass. Ave. and Highland Avenue for a report of a pedestrian struck. There, they found the victim lying in the middle of the crosswalk, near the center double yellow lines of Mass. Ave. He was conscious and alert with no visible injuries, police said.
The man did complain of a rib injury, and he was later taken by ambulance to Lahey Clinic in Burlington, according to police.
He told police that he was trying to cross Mass. Ave. from the Stop & Shop side and didn’t see any cars coming until he was struck. Police said the man had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. The man did admit to having consumed several alcoholic beverages, police said.
The driver told police that he was taking a left turn out of Highland Avenue, and when he turned, his left bumper struck the man. He said the impact of the crash knocked the man back into the crosswalk.
The elementary-school student was struck at about 8:07 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29. Police said the student was walking to school with her mother when she ran in between two cars and into the street. The vehicle involved was driving “cautiously and at a slow rate of speed,” and the driver was not at fault, according to police. The student was transported to Winchester Hospital after complaining of back pain.
