Police: Flip Flops to Blame in Summer Street Crash
A woman totaled her BMW on Summer Street Thursday afternoon after one of her flip flops got caught between the vehicle’s brake and gas pedals, causing her to speed through an intersection and into a low wall, according to police.
The woman was transported by ambulance to Lahey Clinic in Burlington with undisclosed injuries. She was able to speak with police on scene.
Police responded to Summer Street, at its intersection with Brattle and Hemlock streets, at about 12:27 p.m. Thursday for a report of a motor vehicle crash with an injury.
After speaking with two witnesses and the driver, police believed that the woman was traveling down Hemlock Street, toward Brattle and Summer streets, and that when she attempted to brake for a red light, she was unable to due to the wedged flip flop.
One of the witnesses was driving behind the woman’s 2009 BMW 328i sedan, and she said that the vehicle’s brake lights were turning off and on rapidly before the crash.
