Pedestrian Struck Near Arlington High School

Incidents and arrests in Arlington from Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 8-11.

The following information comes from the Arlington Police Department. When arrests are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Pedestrian Struck Near Arlington High School

A female walking toward Arlington Center on Mass. Ave. Friday afternoon was struck by a vehicle when she was crossing Lockeland Avenue, across from Arlington High School, according to police.

Police, fire and rescue were dispatched to the scene at 2:41 p.m. Friday, shortly after the high school’s dismissal.

The female was knocked to the ground during the collision, police said. She told police that she was experiencing pain in her left arm. She was treated at the scene and then taken to a local hospital by Lexington Rescue.

She also told police that cars exiting Lockeland Avenue had stopped for her when she decided to cross. She said she was struck when she was about halfway across the street.

The driver told police that she was crossing over Mass. Ave. from Schouler Court at the time of the incident. She said that she had a green light and, due to sun glare, she could not see the female until it was too late. She said she slammed on her brakes at the “very last second.”

There is no painted crosswalk or signal at Lockeland Avenue.

The driver was issued a citation for “failing to slow for a pedestrian in the roadway,” according to police.

Re: the incident with the pedestrian... sometimes an accident is just that - an accident. The 4-way intersection at Lockland/MassAve/Schouler Court is definitely a busy one - espcially around start of school & dismissal. There are 2 crosswalks & cross/walk signals for crossing Mass. Ave & 1 for crossing Schouler as well. There is neither a crosswalk nor a crossing/walk signal to use when crossing from the west to the east/ east to the west curbs of Lockeland at Mass. Ave.; no button to push to stop traffic to allow safe passage. Maybe there should be. This was an accident - just an accident; not a careless pedestrian (she started to cross after other cars stopped & indicated to her that she should cross), not a speeding driver (who reports being blinded by solar glare). I am not sure why we need to assign blame to anyone for an accident - they happen. And why anyone would blame the police for not being there on the spot to prevent an accident... well until we have a tool that allows premonitions of where & when an incident will occur, I"m not sure how we can expect that. So we all need to be responsible & do what we can to prevent accidents, but having to blame anyone is just ridiculous. I'm just glad that the injuries sustained were not more severe.
