Pedestrian Struck in Mass. Ave. Crosswalk Monday by Driver on Bluetooth

The crash was the second on Mass. Ave. involving a pedestrian in five days.

A female pedestrian was struck in a Mass. Ave. crosswalk at about 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, by a male driver talking on his car’s Bluetooth system, according to police.

The woman was crossing Mass. Ave. from the CVS next to Arlington High School to the bus stop on the other side of the street. The man was traveling eastbound, toward Arlington Center, at about 25-30 mph, he said.

A witness told police the man was not speeding but did not slow down until he hit the woman.

The woman was on her back in the crosswalk but conscious and alert when police arrived. She was transported to Winchester Hospital with leg and arm pain, police said.

Vehicles in the westbound lane had stopped for the woman, who was wearing a dark coat and jeans. The witness, who had stopped for the woman in the westbound lane, said he saw her cross and then heard a loud “thump” but did not see her get hit. She was struck just past the centerline, he said.

The male driver was cited for a crosswalk violation and impeded operation via mobile phone.

On Thursday, Dec. 19, a woman was struck and killed crossing Mass. Ave. in the crosswalk at Orvis Road.
