Bicyclist Ticketed After Being Hit by Car in Arlington Center Crosswalk

A female bicyclist was ticketed by police Thursday afternoon after being struck by a car in an Arlington Center crosswalk.

The bicyclist was crossing Mass. Ave. at about 3:15 p.m. in the crosswalk in front of the Robbins Library, at Water Street. However, she failed to dismount her bike while crossing, according to police, making her subject to motor-vehicle not pedestrian laws. She was cited for a “traffic law compliance.”

The bicyclist, who was crossing toward the library, was struck in the eastbound lane, police said. She was transported to Winchester Hospital with a minor laceration to her right elbow.

The driver said he heard something strike the driver’s side of his car and then looked back to see the bicyclist on the ground in the crosswalk. At that time, he pulled over and checked on her.

In the last year, the town put a no-left-turn sign for cars exiting Water Street. Do more steps need to be taken to make this crosswalk safer?
