Arlington Man Arrested After Road Rage Escalates into Flying Fists in Lexington

An Arlington man was arrested Friday, Sept. 14, in Lexington after allegedly leaving his vehicle and punching another motorist.

A conflict among commuters erupted Friday morning in Lexington, resulting in a punch in the face for one man and handcuffs for another.

According to Lexington Police, two motorists on Massachusetts Avenue became involved in some kind of altercation in which they exchanged words and hand gestures. During this exchange, one of the men allegedly waved a knife around inside of his vehicle.

And things escalated even more once they hit Woburn Street.

According to police, when the vehicles again got stuck in traffic in the area of Woburn Street and Cottage Road, the man with the knife allegedly got out of his pickup truck and punched the other man through an open window in his vehicle.

After delivering the punch, the first man allegedly returned to his vehicle and drove away. After receiving the punch, the second man called 911. A witness also called 911, police said. Those calls were received at 9:11 a.m.

Police located the first man’s vehicle in the area of Lowell Street and Whipple Road. While arresting the man on Whipple Road, police did recover a folding utility knife.

James R. Warter, 51, of 11 Hillcrest St., Arlington, was arrested and charged with assault by dangerous weapon and assault and battery.
