$70,000 Stolen from Oakland Avenue Lock Box

The theft occurred over the weekend.

An Oakland Avenue resident called police Sunday evening to report that someone had broken into his home sometime over the weekend and taken $70,000 in cash from his lock box.

The resident, who had been in Vermont, told police the money was in seven white envelopes, $10,000 each. Initially, he reported that he was missing $40,000, but later remembered the total amount and called police again.

The resident returned home to find that his side door had been forced open. A black trash bag with some of his personal items, including documents with his usernames, passwords and bank account numbers, had been left in the middle of his living room, along with a black crowbar, which wasn’t his, he said.

A neighbor heard a noise like someone was “knocking something down” coming from the residence at about 3 p.m. Sunday and saw a white Toyota utility van outside – however, she assumed it was her neighbor making the noise.

Two latex gloves were also found outside the residence, police said.
