Pedestrian Safety and Downing Square

Last fall, during hearings held by the Mass DOT, elected officials, including Kevin Greeley, speaking on behalf of the Board of Selectmen, and State Senator Ken Donnelly, claimed that the Town of Arlington put pedestrian safety first in the context of road construction.

I challenged these disingenuous statements at that time.

Now, one only needs to have tried to walked through Downing Square anytime in the past few days for an example where our elected officials have allowed an unsafe, public safety hazard to exist.

The attached two photos show the sidewalk completely removed along the Park Ave extension with no alternative path for pedestrians.  This sidewalk is the primary path to a daycare, the reservoir and for numerous public transit users.  Note the heavy traffic and absence of a police detail.

Arlington's elected officials like to talk the talk, but you'll never see them walk the impassable walk.
