With small kids in tow these days, you’re probably not looking at the holiday season the way you used to. Sure, you’ll still drop in on the office holiday party, maybe cruise by a few friends’ houses, but your activities now are a bit different. You need “kid friendly” things that your whole family can enjoy together.
This year, use the holiday season to spend some time together, but not just sitting around the house in your pajamas. There are so many great family activities to explore in our area, you really don’t have an excuse not to get out and have some fun!
Boston Central – Family Fun Events
A few months ago, I discovered an invaluable resource on the web in Boston Central. Here, you can find an entire calendar filled with great events for families and kids to enjoy throughout Massachusetts (mostly in Boston, but not exclusively.) Click by day to find something fun to do or view the week’s newsletter for a roundup of all the activities coming up.
Some events you might want to put on your family’s calendar include:
- Boston Pops Holiday Pops Kids Matinees, every Saturday through December 24. These special concerts have lots of music, kids’ sing-alongs, and pictures with Santa!
- The Christmas Revels (Cambridge) is a family-friendly play that tells the story of 16th century pilgrims gathering for an annual feast and holiday pageant. It runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday through December 29.
- Meet Global Santa at Barefoot Books in Concord, December 24 at 11 AM. He’ll tell stories from his travels all around the world, take pictures with the goods, and share holiday treats and fun family crafts.
- Holiday Wonderland: Newport Mansions, Rhode Island, is a winter wonderland come to life. And Santa will be there too, now through January 2, 2012.
Zoolights at Stone Zoo
For something closer to home, and specifically aimed at toddlers and small children, visit the Stone Zoo in Stoneham now through Sunday, January 1. Zoolights is an annual tradition at the Stone Zoo, attracting thousands of visitors year after year. You’ll get into the holiday spirit as you stroll through the zoo’s tree-lined paths, alit with thousands of white twinkling lights. At the Stone Zoo, your family can also visit real reindeer! Plus, Santa will be on hand in Santa’s Castle, available for photos through December 23. Zoolights also features a magical holiday-themed world to explore, complete with fairy tale characters and dancing plush animals!
Purchase tickets online at Zoo New England, just $6 for adults on weekends and FREE for children under 2! That’s quite possibly the cheapest event I’ll participate in all holiday season, so I guess I’ll see you there!
Other Holiday Events
There are lots of fun things to do for the holidays that the entire family will enjoy, many more of which you can find at Go New England, on About.com. Take a peek and see if any of these events is something you’d be interested in.
With your children at this young age, it’s the perfect time to start new family traditions. Take a few trips to experience something new together and who knows? You may end up having a blast together. Of course, add in your family’s own holiday traditions as well and make this special season one to remember for years and years to come. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures!
