Susan Anne (Leitch) Wisniowski (one-time Susan Gerhold), 51, formerly of Arlington, died on Sept. 25, 2013, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md., following a prolonged illness.
Susan was born on Jan. 3, 1962, at Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island, the daughter of the late Marilyn Leslie Leitch of Arlington, MA, and Senior Master Chief Jack Leitch, USN.
Susan was the wife of Charles Wisniowski, her husband of 14 years. Susan was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church in Arlington. Susan and Charles were married at Trinity by the Rev. Harold Small on Sept. 11, 1999.
Susan had worked in the mid-1990s as a laboratory technician at MIT’s Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, Cambridge, where she helped to work on the Human Genome Project. She later worked as a research assistant at Harvard’s McMahon Laboratory before becoming a homemaker.
Susan was also the founder and administrator of the Obesity Surgery Support Group (OSSG), an Internet list serve, website and weekly meeting group in Frederick, Md., that was a source of support and information for pre- and post-op weight-loss surgery patients. It boasted more than 140 members between 2002 and 2007.
Surviving in addition to her husband are daughter Laurinda Gerhold Watson of Anderson, S.C., also formerly of Arlington; Susan’s granddaughter Brianna Shepherd, 12, who Susan helped to raise; and grandson Tyler Watson, 5. She also leaves behind sister Teresa Dadez of St. Leo, Fla.; brother Thomas Leitch of Williamsburg, Va.; uncle and aunt George and Barbara Leslie Jr. of Wareham; and longtime family friend Dr. William Y. Marcus of Germantown, Md. Susan was preceded in death by grandparents George and Viola Leslie Sr. of Arlington.
A memorial celebration will be held for Susan at a later date, and her ashes will be scattered by her family at a place special to Susan and Charles. Expressions of sympathy and loving memories may be shared at Friends of Susan Anne Wisniowski on Facebook.
