Mementos of Pet Ownership in New England

Birdcages, fish bowls, dog collars, squirrel cages, and chewed furniture--these are the physical remnants of pet ownership. Historic New England’s Senior Curator of Collections Nancy Carlisle surveyed many history organizations and located more than eighty pet objects from the eighteenth through the early twentieth century. These artifacts reveal surprising attitudes about animals and uncover unexpected cultural assumptions. The MSPCA archival material, such as books, photographs, and magazines is on view after the lecture. Co-sponsored with MSPCA Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center.
