“Viewing August to June: Bringing Life to School is an
uplifting emotional and cognitive experience. It renews one’s faith in
Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s (1712-1778) assertion that “every child is born
good and it is the responsibility of adults to draw this goodness out.”

–Review in the International Journal of Multicultural Education Spring
2012, by Dr. John Caruso Jr., Western Connecticut State University

Come inside a public school happily and purposefully going against
current trends and join 26 8-10 year olds, their teacher, and their
parents for a year bursting with opportunities for curiosity, creativity
and compassion. It asks viewers to stop and reconsider how we achieve
what we really value for our children and society. That it will look
different in different communities is a given, and is the beginning of
understanding why we cannot legislate how to teach, or put all our eggs
in standardized measurements of success. Give communities well-prepared
and supported teachers, in schools that are well-equipped and
well-staffed, then let those communities create the learning
environments best suited to their needs.

” In August to June, we have a visual record of a community of
learners, a series of moments — discoveries and setbacks — through the
school year that accumulate like sparkling beads on a string.  The
result is as engrossing as it is illuminating.”

– Alfie Kohn
