A NEW GENERATION OF WINNING FILMMAKERS

The 3rd annual Arlington International Film
Festival (AIFF) shows independent cinematic masterpieces from filmmakers around
the world.  It is also dedicated to
promoting the next generation of filmmakers by showcasing a special category of
student shorts.  This year twenty-one high
school students competed for “Best” in film categories awarded by the
festival’s Selection Committee. Submissions came from as near as the
Massachusetts towns of Arlington, Boston, Cambridge, Dorchester, Roxbury,
Wayland and Winchester and as far as Montreal, Canada. AIFF is proud to show
these excellent student filmmakers shorts reflecting the opinions, fears,
dreams and talents of a young generation as represented through the eye of the
lens.

 The winner of the “2013
Best Narrative Short” is Malcolm
DC, a Boston resident, for his film, THE SHINGLES. Tessa Tracy and Sophia Santos of Cambridge, MA received “2013
Best Documentary Short” for their film, LA LUCHA. Shorts that received
“Honorable Mention” are as follows:

Words from the Judges

“We've come to expect a high standard in the films submitted in the high
school competition.  They show creativity and an impressive grasp of the
medium.  It was a pleasure to watch this year's submissions and a
difficult task selecting the winners." Bob
Kuhn

“What a pleasure it was to watch the student
films.  To be impressed by the passion,
creativity, and craft.  To watch the
beginnings of true skill emerging.  To
envy the tools and opportunities that these students have now, that I didn't
experience until much, much later in my life. I so very much enjoyed sharing a
table with Bob Kuhn and Chris Legare.  I
learned so much from listening to their wisdom and critiques.  I appreciated the opportunity to share some
wisdom and perspective of my own.  We
agreed about quite a bit, but not about everything.  We were all storytellers, but had walked
different professional paths.  After
years of producing thirty-minute episodes of television, I know I was focused
on writing and story arc.  But I also
looked for films that moved me, that touched my heart or tweaked my brain.  I looked for strength of craft, in camera,
sound, and editing, and how well and consistently it was demonstrated.  Finally, I looked for creativity in all those
categories, as well as strength of concept for the film itself.  I'm excited for these students to screen
their work with this festival audience.” Faye
Hollander
