Two Arlington Post Offices on the Chopping Block

The postal service has put the East Arlington and Arlington Heights Post Offices under review.

Two Arlington post offices have been put under review for possible closure, according to a press release from the U.S. Postal Service.

The post offices in East Arlington, at 240 Massachusetts Ave., and Arlington Heights, at 1347 Massachusetts Ave., are among 43 in Massachusetts the postal service plans to study to determine the "customer needs," the statement, released Tuesday, said.

The postal service currently operates 32,000 offices around the country, and the need to keep them all open has diminished as more people use places like pharmacies, grocery stores and the internet to make postal purchases.

“Our customer’s habits have made it clear that they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business,” said Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe in a written statement.

A total of 3,700 post offices around the country will be studied, the release said. The postal service also announced it will offer a new "Village Post Office" program, which would be operated by local businesses, such as pharmacies, grocery stores and other appropriate retailers, and would offer popular postal products and services such as stamps and flat-rate packaging, the press release said.

Thanks for the comments Susan ... most of the people I talked to today in Arlington shared your thoughts ... a lot of them said the branch in the center isn't overly crowded, especially at off-peak hours ... I'll have a full story tomorrow morning
