Did Dane Cook’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Joke Cross the Line?

The comedian and Arlington native made a joke Thursday that referenced last week's mass shooting in Aurora, Colo. What's your take?

Comedian Dane Cook, an Arlington native, is in trouble with some after making a joke Thursday in a stand-up bit at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles that referenced last week’s mass shooting in Aurora, Colo., which left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

Here’s the joke (via the Daily Caller):

“So I heard that the guy came into the theater about 25 minutes into the movie. And I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie, but the movie is pretty much a piece of [expletive] … yeah, spoiler alert. And I know that if none of that would have happened, I’m pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of [expletive], probably was like ‘Ugh [expletive] shoot me.’”

The live audience groaned at first but then laughed and cheered, according to the Daily Caller.

What’s your take? Should some tragedies, like the Aurora shooting, be off-limits to comedians? Or is everything fair game?
