Did Dane Cook’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Joke Cross the Line?

The comedian and Arlington native made a joke Thursday that referenced last week’s mass shooting in Aurora, Colo. What’s your take?

Comedian Dane Cook, an Arlington native, is in trouble with some after making a joke Thursday in a stand-up bit at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles that referenced last week’s mass shooting in Aurora, Colo., which left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

Here’s the joke (via the Daily Caller):

“So I heard that the guy came into the theater about 25 minutes into the movie. And I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie, but the movie is pretty much a piece of [expletive] … yeah, spoiler alert. And I know that if none of that would have happened, I’m pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of [expletive], probably was like ‘Ugh [expletive] shoot me.’”

The live audience groaned at first but then laughed and cheered, according to the Daily Caller.

What’s your take? Should some tragedies, like the Aurora shooting, be off-limits to comedians? Or is everything fair game?

Tacky, tacky, tacky.
Drew July 28, 2012 at 03:00 PM
There is nothing funny about this guy and it is actually uncomfortable and embarassing to watch him perform. He is basically a loser who only appeals to people like himself who have no sense of humor.
Paul July 28, 2012 at 04:52 PM
This stupid comment is no big deal. In general, Dane Cook is a Wicked Pissah Townie.
Tim July 28, 2012 at 05:40 PM
No big deal Paul ... Hope you never go through a violent attack against a family member ... Dane Cook was and still is a clown ....

Wanna be cured of being a bummer? Laugh at yourself

Cheap shot for cheap laughs by a cheap talent. Clearly, I think this is not fodder for jokes. I get the need for and inclination for dark humor: but mature adults stifle the impulse out of compassionate respect. Cook clearly has none, and that's shameful.
inthegloaming July 28, 2012 at 06:11 PM
If that's the notable quality of a Wicked Pissah Townie, I'm grateful I will never measure down.
Tim July 28, 2012 at 09:13 PM
See what I think is funny about cook was how a family member stole all that money from him .. NOW THAT'S FUNNY .....
Drew July 28, 2012 at 09:54 PM
Exactly....again, he is just a loser moron with a pea brain, no morality or sense of right and wrong. He just doesn't get it, which is why he should never ever give up his day job at Burger King or whatever. There is never anything funny about a tragedy where people have died or been killed. Never!
Drew July 28, 2012 at 09:57 PM
It was probably whoever brought him up to be who and what he is today!! LOL!!
CC July 29, 2012 at 01:44 AM
Oh really, Tim? Get a life, you nobody.
Jill Hamton July 29, 2012 at 03:11 AM
You do what you have to do to make a living. We're all sitting around discussing his work. Brilliant marketing if you ask me. At least he didn't tell Lizzy Warren Pocahontas jokes. I guess that's why he's working the Laugh Factory in LA and we're blogging on the Patch. I also don't believe that joke seriously offended any one of you -- you just hate the guy. He's like Al Gore; he could of said "I love bunny rabbits" and you would have been all over him like flies on sh*t.
inthegloaming July 29, 2012 at 05:53 AM
Jill, I'm guessing Cook was making a living of sorts before he went too far. Or maybe he lways goes too far. So maybe if people "just hate him" it's because he's a lousy comedian combined with questionable human being. Of course there's always an audience for crap like this (e.g., the truly non-funny roasts on Comedy Central): but it would be interesting to see from a social experiment perspective, if he actually loses clientele because of this. (Like Howard Dean's political campaign ended during the 2004 primaries in Iowa when he what came to be known as the "Dean Scream.") I'd never watched nor heard of Dane Cook before this. I AM offended by the failed joke, enough to know I'd have no interest in ever subjecting myself to what he considers comedy, even if he played on my front doorstep and the tickets were free and they paid me to sit still and listen.

While I don't think anything should be off limits, decent comedians usually wait a while out of respect. But I did say 'decent' comedians.... Cook is a hack with a rep for stealing other comedian's jokes. He likely overheard it and tried getting it out there quickly to try to appear original.
Drew July 29, 2012 at 02:24 PM
Jill--Let me explain something to you..only a sociopath wouldn't be seriously offended by a joke involving cold blooded murder. My brother, who is a firefighter was seriously injured in the 9/11 disaster and almost died. If anyone tried to make a joke about that to my face , believe me when I tell you that person would never be able to even open his mouth again much less tell a joke. So yes, although you don't think so, all of us were highly offended by what's his name----Dane Cook or whatever his name is.
Paul July 29, 2012 at 05:21 PM
America is all about second chances: Dane Cook deserves a second chance. But, you haters are so overboard that you won't see that what he said ONLY had to do with the quaility of the flick and nothing to do with the tragedy in Aurora. The libtards on her, the moonbeamers and the elitists snif snif but when hateful, nasty commments and jokes were made about people they HATE, they revelled in the bad humor. Dane Cook gets a second chance....he is a good son and a native born Arlingtonian... he is WICKED PISSAH which for those of you who are carping "oy oy oy" that means he is a "mensch".
Drew July 29, 2012 at 07:43 PM
Jill, my personal information is irrevelant as is whether my story can be "verified" as you were raving on about. It doesn't matter because I was simply using my experience to emphasize my feeling on the subject of that joke but I am not going to comment further because it is a waste of time. You just don't get it which was obvious when you commented on Paul's comment and said that you had "no "what what he said but was agreeing with him wholeheartedly anyway. I have to say that you really scare me.
inthegloaming July 29, 2012 at 08:20 PM
Wow, Jill, why are you taking this so personally? Are you related to Cook? An ex girlfriend still in love? ;-p just surprised, you seemed so level-headed in other Patch discussions. As for anonymous vs named -- is Jill Hamton real or made up? -- sorry, but there are crazy assault weapon carrying psychos out there, no doubt in our very own town, who have lousy impulse control. A negative opinion about crazy assault weapon carrying psychos on a public discussion board could inspire them to show up at a real person's house for an armed debate.
inthegloaming July 29, 2012 at 08:31 PM
We "haters" aren't half as emotionally riled as you defenders seem to be. Tempest in teapot and life goes on. I bet none of us is blogging about him elsewhere. The question was asked, we gave our opinion, done. Seems the extreme of actual "hate" is on your side: the folks who take being disagreed with soooo personally you have to personally attack. btw, your statement that Cook's joke had nothing to do with the Aurora shootings/ONLY to do with the movie . . . there are no words for how incomprehensible that is. But I stopped reading whatever you had to say after that.
Drew July 29, 2012 at 08:38 PM
I am done reading anything you have to say because you make absolutely no sense whatsoever and I repeat you and peple like you scare me.
Tim July 29, 2012 at 09:05 PM
Jill Hamton is a fake name . Heck atleast I use my first name and most of you if your from Arlington know exactly who I am and I don't give a rats behind what you think of me
inthegloaming July 29, 2012 at 09:24 PM
I, too, am surprised that anyone here wouldn't be offended to some degree, great or small. And I'm really squicked that anyone would go to any length to actually defend it. Thinking it might be time to move back to The People's Republic of Cambridge. Or even my hometown of Manhattan. (Why, yes, I would appreciate all of your help packing, thank you!) seems less weirdly sicko there.
Jill Hamton July 29, 2012 at 09:24 PM
Shutup kuup, You think that spamming a batman blog is going to stop us.
inthegloaming July 29, 2012 at 09:38 PM
A mensch is a person of honorable character, who always does the right and kind thing, who is to be admired and emulated. No, Cook doesn't fit that definition. (Don't argue: this comes from my 90 year old Jewish aunt in the Bronx. No one argues with her, not even me.)
Paul July 29, 2012 at 10:01 PM
Hey "inthegloaming" call two men and a truck and i'll send over my cleaning lady to fumigate your place once you leave. Bye now. Have a nice life in Manhattan ... You are probably a Mets fan anyway
Paul July 29, 2012 at 10:05 PM
Your 90 year old Aunt would be a welcome addition to the Town... Why dont you just trade places.. Arlington will gain some great chicken soup and wisdom.
inthegloaming July 30, 2012 at 04:42 AM
Yes, but you'd have to listen to her kvetch about the terrible conditions in her luxury $3K/month retirement home with Chihuly glass decor EVERY night like I do. Be careful what you wish for! :-)
